A mission-driven, seasoned executive, Nancy Somerville has a proven track record of providing visionary leadership, strategic planning, organizational high performance, sustainability, and effective and accountable governance. Somerville served for 19 years as CEO of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). Through a consistent, strategic focus on advocacy and public awareness, she enabled the Society to become a more visible and effective advocate on climate change, green infrastructure, active transportation and other environmental and land use issues critical to the creation of healthy and resilient communities. As a result, ASLA’s environmental leadership and community involvement garnered awards and recognition from the District Office of the Mayor, the DowntownDC BID, the District Department of Energy and the Environment, the National Park Service, and the Kresge Foundation. At ASLA, Somerville embedded the core value of sustainability into all aspects of ASLA operations, enabling the Society to live its values and be a role model organization. She also introduced the use of the Baldrige Excellence Framework for advancing organizational high performance; ASLA was recognized for achievement in performance excellence by the U.S. Senate Productivity and Quality Award for Virginia and D.C. and was qualified to compete for the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Somerville joined ASLA after 18 years with the American Institute of Architects, where she served as managing director and vice president of program areas including membership, government affairs, chapter relations, community development, and continuing education.Somerville was elected to membership in Lambda Alpha International, the honorary land economics society, in 2004; received the Civic Award of Excellence from Green Roofs for Healthy Cities in 2008; won the Washington Business Journal’s Healthiest CEO competition in 2013; received the Chairman’s Award for service from the Renewable Natural Resources Foundation in 2016; is an honorary member of ASLA and the American Institute of Architects; and in 2017 was among the first class of individuals to earn the SITES AP designation. Since leaving ASLA, Somerville continues to focus on issues of organizational governance and sustainability as a consultant and in volunteer roles, including serving as senior examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, as Council Member for the Town of Chevy Chase View, and member of the Maryland Green & Blue Infrastructure Policy Advisory Commission.
