As a Compliance and Ethics Officer, I am continually intrigued by the marriage of social science research and compliance: what motivates people to do what they do? How can we make it easier for people to do the "right thing"? Research done by people like Dan and Chip Heath, Daniel Pink, Dan Ariely, and Dov Seidman have been helpful in designing a program that is designed to build the structure and processes and environment that helps employees be compliant.

One of the most challenging but rewarding aspects of being in-house counsel is working with clients to achieve a joint "decision framework" - rather than just giving "yes/no" answers. I always felt the goal was to help managers understand the approach to an issue - so that they would be able to think through problems.

This was my first plunge into healthcare operations - and while I was the administrator for operational departments like radiology, risk management and the lab, the areas where regulatory compliance intersected with healthcare was a natural attraction given my legal background.
