WPI is a social housing developer creating homes that enable women and their children to livewith dignity as contributing members of local communities. We build and buy new houses andapartments, which are rented on a long-term affordable basis to disadvantaged women andchildren. WPI currently has 66 properties, providing safe, secure housing for approx. 180 womenand children.There is urgent need to increase the supply of affordable rental housing. The 2011 Censusestimated over 22,000 people to be homeless in Victoria, including more than 3,500 children.Women and children escaping family violence are the largest group seeking support fromhomelessness agencies. However, there are currently over 34,000 applicants on the VictorianPublic Housing waiting list.Resources for developments are sourced by WPI from the private, public and community sectorsin order to leverage contributions and maximize the use of limited resources. We have partneredwith a number of builders, including JG King Homes, to build our houses. All of our funders andsupporters are gratefully acknowledged.WPI has the following objectives: To provide and manage not-for-profit low-cost rental housing for low-income women. To act as a lessor of low rental or subsidized housing for low-income women. To refer low-income women facing homelessness and destitution to low rental orsubsidized accommodation. To refer women living in WPI’s housing to counselling, rehabilitation and support services,where appropriate.WPI is a Registered Housing Provider, regulated by the Victorian Government Housing Registrar,which enables access to government funding, when available, for housing development projects.Currently there is no federal or state government funding available to increase the provision ofsocial housing in Victoria, so we are working with philanthropic donors to develop additionalhousing.
