As an AmeriCorps fellow at App State, I sought to serve rural, historically underserved communities of Western NC. I assisted with the interprofessionalism aspects of the Boone-based team as well as the Appalachian Medical Reserve Corps (AMRC) unit that was birthed out of it, which aims to increase the preparedness of local and regional public health systems across 25 counties and advocate for the implementation and education of Psychological First Aid.

In the summer of 2023, I built a close working relationship with a family of four in the Boone area as a professional nanny. I provided dependable, consistent care to two young children throughout the day and occasionally overnight during the week. Entrusted with full supervision, I was in charge of meeting the basic needs of the children by feeding them, offering mental and emotional support, transporting them to and engaging with them in various stimulating artistic and physical activities, and overseeing them in their daily household and farm chores. Additionally, I performed light housekeeping and petcare in the home to further assist the family and ease the work-week stress of the parents.

At the A.E. Finley YMCA, I supervised campers and sought to ensure their safety and well-being. Additionally, I built strong social and emotional ties with them and their parents. Working alongside my fellow staff members, I planned and lead programs designed for both children and teens that were not only fun and exciting but also encouraged significant personal growth and skill development. Furthermore, I acted as a daily role model for them, helping to teach them responsibility, sportsmanship, friendship, and an appreciation for nature.
