Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul Area

Supervised student teachers in ESL in both elementary and secondary placements. Observed, provided feedback to and evaluated student teachers completing their licensure programs. Acted as liason between school districts and university.

Elected in 2007 and reelected in 2010. Served as vice chairperson for two years. As a Board, we were successful in creating and implementing a strategic plan including mission, vision, and beliefs, hiring a superintendent as well as an interim superintendent and completing boundary changes. We also passed a levy in 2013 which provided funding to the district for 8 years. District has a $100 million budget which the board is responsible for managing.

Coordinated, planned and implemented the local chapter of a collaborative project to improve the sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) survival rate in the United States. Lead the efforts of the local area hospitals, area school districts, municipal leaders and emergency medical services to collaborate in education and process change resulting in better cardiac arrest outcomes, more AEDs in the community, and more citizens trained in CPR. Assisted in soliciting and securing grants; connected with local champions and SCA survivors; conducted community outreach and train-the-trainer sessions; supported and implemented initiatives from the national office of Take Heart America.

Responsible for all aspects of coordinating the Adult Basic Education program (ESL, GED, Citizenship, Basic Skills, online GED, Workforce Preparation, Transition to Post-Secondary, Family Literacy, Volunteer Coordination) for the South Washington County School District. Brought the program into compliance with state mandates. Created curriculum and policy to guide this process. Supervised staff of 10. The program tripled in size and vastly expanded offerings to students. Through actively pursuing grant opportunities, created partnerships and added 10-20% to annual program revenue.

Facilitated Graduate School of Education MAEd learning communities with an urban/ELL focus as well as a suburban community; taught core courses (Educating for Equity and Social Justice, Explorations: Reflection, Community Building, and Knowledge Construction, Designing Effective Learning Environments, Teaching and Learning, Foundations in American Education, Public Policy: Design and Action, Inclusion and Research Forum), advised students on Capstone completion, evaluated students. Taught Student Teaching Seminar, supervised, coached and evaluated student teachers in K-12 ESL licensure program. Taught, evaluated and supervised student teachers in the TEFL certificate program.

Taught and evaluated ESL students in an inner-city, public-school setting (Ramsey Junior High, French Immersion Elementary and Ramsey County Juvenile Detention Center); also served on the Ramsey Site Council, Safety Committee, Hmong Parents’ Group and planned/supervised Asian Club activities. Created a program to expose ESL students to different experiences outside of school in conjunction with Leadership Minneapolis, part of the Greater Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce. Mentored student teachers in classroom.

Coordinated, created curriculum for and taught in a federal grant program that trained mainstream teachers in techniques to facilitate ELL students’ success in secondary classrooms (SIOP); participants earned graduate credit; responsible for recruiting/advertising, reporting to federal government, monitoring participants’ assignments, mentoring secondary science and math teachers and supervising a staff of 10.

Created curriculum for secondary ESL program in St. Paul; determined outcomes for each of five levels; wrote curriculum overview for each level; wrote specific syllabi for 28 different classes offered at the junior and senior high schools; evaluated and adopted new textbooks as needed.

Coordinated a language/culture exchange program of American and international students with approximately 150 participants each quarter; recruited and networked within the community to find American conversation partners for international students from all parts of the world; handled all administrative tasks; also worked to get international students more involved in the community through work experience and activities; wrote weekly newsletter, Just for Fun, that helped students find things to do in the community; planned extracurricular activities each quarter, publicized and led each event; wrote funded grant proposal to support educational extracurricular activities; prepared comprehensive final report documenting the success of these programs and student responses. Taught and evaluated all levels and language skills to ESL students in an intensive language program; also planned orientation activities, taught non-academic courses and content courses in the summer intensive language programs; chaired committee that redesigned the grading system; mentored student teachers.
