Guidance Navigation & Control (Gnc) / Autonomy Engineer
CurrentResearch & Development (R&D) of all aspects of autonomy for aerial drones.
Graduate Student Researcher
Researched ways to enhance the safety of autonomous systems through the implementation of advanced control theoretic techniques.Developed a Robot Operating System (ROS) package from scratch for refineCBF, an algorithm capable of constructing safety-preserving Control Barrier Functions (CBFs) in real-time. This is achieved through a blending of CBFs and Hamilton Jacobi Reachability (HJR) analysis.Demonstrated functionality using an autonomous differential-drive robot in the physics simulator Gazebo, and a Turtlebot3 Burger for real hardware testing. Perfect state-estimation for state feedback was achieved using motion capture. Implemented an optimal control-based safety-agnostic control policy, which was filtered to be safe by solving a CBF quadratic program (CBF-QP). This optimization program ensures safety while minimally altering the orginal control policy.
Autopilot Software Engineer
Developed Python scripts to automate regression testing of a UAS autopilot GPS-denied system which utilized an Extended Kalman Filter to accurately estimate the state of the drone.
Controls Engineer Ii
Designed Energy Management Systems for electro-mechanical equipment (primarily HVAC) in the Greater Los Angeles area, for major clients, such as NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, UCLA, and the California Institute of Technology.Selected sensors, actuators, and microcontrollers needed for various commercial building HVAC applications such as the control of air handling units, central plants, and variable-air-volume boxes.Programmed control systems using Distech EC-Net4 for HVAC and lighting equipment/devices. Tuned PID loops to increase building electrical efficiency and improve tenants' comfort.
Controls Engineer I
Designed Energy Management Systems for electro-mechanical equipment (primarily HVAC) in the Greater San Diego area, for major clients of the region, such as Qualcomm, UCSD, Apple and the U.S. Military and Government.Completed engineering submittals for new and retrofit projects totaling over $4 million in company revenue. Engineered the Energy Management System for the new UCSD graduate housing campuses, Nuevo West and East.
Environmental Engineer
Completed air emission calculations and air dispersion modeling to ensure clients' compliance with air pollution regulations in their respective county, city and state utilizing ArcGIS.Detected and reported the early signs of a production stream leak during a volatile organics inspection at Illumina's San Diego facility.Fulfilled and processed various permit applications for air, water, and land use related projects.Analyzed tracer gas, odor observations and wind velocity vector data from a City of San Diego landfill tracer study to produce graphs illustrating correlations between odor sources and observations.
Student Researcher
Worked alongside Postdoctoral scholar to test and diagnose coastal ocean circulation patterns in a realistically forced simulation with the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) under supervision of Physical Oceanography Professor, Arthur Miller.Discovered the presence of the Butterfly Effect in the simulated environment by comparing output data when initial conditions between runs were slightly perturbed.Applied knowledge of physical oceanography, fluid mechanics and MATLAB to extract, manipulate and plot ROMS output from multiple simulation scenarios through the UNIX computing environment.Variables such as temperature, vorticity and kinetic energy were compared with observational teams' findings to assess the validity of the model's output while observing potential oceanic behavioral effects caused by the inner shelf near Point Sal.
