I will look for agents who are knowledgeable and trustworthy and who are so good at their profession they will save you unnecessary worries. It does not matter whether your move is local, regional or national . . . I will find you an excellent agent (or two) with whom to work. I will personally interview each agent, as well as their managing broker. This allows me to come to a strong personal judgement about the appropriateness and suitability of a particular agent to work specifically with you. Once I’m certain I’ve found the agent for you, I make the referral. The final choice, of course, is yours alone. You are free to retain them or not. Management of major cultural institution during a period of extreme financial stress and Board conflict. Contributed to the survival of the Society and the beginnings of its revitalization. Re-envisioned the role of the Society and helped bring it more into alignment with its mission of serving the entire population of California. Revived the significant journal, "California History," by hiring a new editor/manager and relocating it to a new academic home. Challenged dysfunctional Board practices and won a few reforms. As a last and lasting success, brought a new group of Board members into office -- over the objections of Old Guard and at the cost of own tenure.

Directed a state-wide grant program designed to encourage and implement programs using the resources of the humanities disciplines and humanities scholars, conducted off campuses in community locations, for public (not academic) audiences. Such programs often applied perspective from the humanities to issues of public policy of local concern and interest. Position involved running the grants program, evaluating grant applications, recommending actions on applications to a 20 person Board, managing the grants that the Board chose to fund, and doing site evaluations of project activity throughout the state. It required an annual report and re-application for Federal funding from the parent US Government agency. Also ran the annual "Living Cultural Treasures of New Mexico" Gala and Awards Celebration.

Developed, curated, adapted and mounted large format traveling exhibitions designed for installation in open spaces of major shopping malls. Cultural and historical exhibitions travelled to scores of shopping mall tours across America. Exhibitions were originals, or adapted from shows by grantees of state humanities councils and the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition Service.

Major traveling exhibition on the built environment of North America, commissioned by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners on the occasion of their 100th year. Wrote and directed the project, as well as writing the grant application that resulted in being funded by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities,18 state humanities councils, the UBCJA, and three corporate sponsors. The exhibition toured museums, convention halls and enclosed shopping malls for 54 months and was seen by more than 12 million viewers.

Directed national conferences of state program boards. Presented funding proposals for state councils to the presidentially-appointed NEH Governing Board.
