Nathan Cole has spent over ten years living and working in South East Asia and currently lives with his wife and three children in the idyllic, sleepy town of Tha Khek, Laos. When he is not busy selling water filters, he enjoys spending time with friends, cycling through the beautiful Lao countryside, and exploring the many caves found nearby. He says, “The best is taking my family on boat rides through the different underground rivers in our area. They love it, and for me it is always an enjoyable experience!” Nathan gets around with fluent Lao. The language is fairly second nature to him, though it wasn’t always that way. It was a bit more difficult when he arrived in Laos in 2005 to work at a Lao-American, water-engineering firm. One of his first projects was a one-year pilot to manufacture and set up sales distribution of the cement bio-sand filter. From this experience, he became convinced of household water treatment application in Laos. In 2007, he became a company director for the engineering firm, and then in 2010, he started TerraClear to focus exclusively on ceramic water filters. In doing so, he and his business partner were entering new territory. Today, though still small, TerraClear is the largest household water filter company in country, with a market consisting almost entirely of the rural poor. In taking the concept to reality, Nathan and the team have spent considerable time and carried significant risks in creating a market for water filters that previously didn’t exist. Their aim is to bring clean water to rural villagers throughout Laos. He and the TerraClear team are busy making a lasting impact. Nathan has completed a BS in Crop & Soil Science from Oregon State University and a MS in International Agricultural Development with a focus on community development from the University of California Davis.
