I am passionate about creating inclusive environments for everyone to thrive.As a proud graduate of Trenton Central High School, I returned home after pursuing post-secondary studies and have facilitated access to college and career opportunities for thousands of at-risk students. I honor my mentors’ guidance every day. Over time, I have witnessed the difference that a safe environment where open and honest communication prevails makes in growth and self-confidence. As a natural relationship builder, I have proudly shared the journeys of many to achieving careers in fields such as technology, medicine, and business. Likewise, I have been available to provide emotional support and access to resources to those who have faced unimaginable challenges. Organizational cultures of belonging and inclusion start with difficult conversations. Thus, I am committed to having dialogues about students’ home and community realities with those who are unfamiliar with the impact of poverty, trauma, and other risk factors on academic and career success. Since financial constraints should not stop anyone from achieving career goals, I recently established The Miller Family Foundation to provide scholarships for higher education as a tribute to my father and other members of my family. Examples of my recent career highlights include: ► Designed and implemented early intervention programs to ensure academic and socioemotional growth.► Connected with local organizations to pinpoint scholarship opportunities. ► Optimized access to the most suitable mental health services for students’ needs. ► Expedited availability of comprehensive support initiatives for families impacted by gang violence and bullying to empathetically process their trauma and grief.I earned a master’s degree in school personnel at Wilmington University in New Castle, DE, and I have a bachelor’s degree in Africana studies with a minor in communications from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. I also completed coursework at Morgan State University (HBCU) in Baltimore, MD, and Morehouse College (HBCU) in Atlanta, GA. College And Academic CounselorTrenton Board Of Education/Trenton Public Schools Jan 2008 - PresentAbout the organization: This is one of two high schools in the district; its enrollment in grades 10 to 12 is composed of 99% minority and 40% economically disadvantaged students. The school is organized into small learning communities focused on specific career fields, and over 75% of its graduates pursue higher education. I am the education and career advisor to ~350 students every year. I am proud to share that some of my students have attended prestigious higher education institutions and work in fields such as medicine, teaching, counseling, and culinary arts. I report to the vice president of the learning community.As a firm believer in the value of a true “open door policy,” I am only a text message or email away from my students. They know that they can reach out to me whenever they need to discuss personal, academic, and disciplinary issues without fear of negative consequences. They can truly be themselves and I encourage them to be authentic everywhere they go.With the right tools and models, they can succeed and think beyond today. School Counselor, Pj Hill Middle SchoolPj Hill Middle School Jan 2006 - Jan 2008Trenton, New Jersey, United StatesAbout the organization: This school, also known as PJ Hill Elementary School, served students between the ages of 8 and 13 in grades 7 to 9. The majority of its students (i.e., ~65%) identified themselves as Hispanic while ~34% of them identified themselves as Black. I delivered responsive counseling through individual and group sessions to address the academic, social, and personal concerns of ~300 students every year. Middle school represents a major transition in the lives of students who are in a critical developmental phase. At this stage, they are very vulnerable as they discover who they are and who they want to be. Even though the main focus of my role was guiding them to handle academic and career issues, I also made sure that I continually modeled the right behaviors to interact appropriately in different settings. I paid special attention to any emerging cultural issues and turned them into opportunities for them to learn to accept and respect diversity and differences. School Counselor, Daylight/Twilight Alternative High SchoolDaylight/Twilight Alternative High School Jan 2005 - Jan 2006Trenton, New Jersey, United StatesAbout the organization: This school offers daytime and evening educational options to a 100% minority and 32% economically disadvantaged nontraditional at-risk student population. In my first role in the district, I provided guidance and support to ~250 students enrolled in grades 9 to 12 who had unique needs. For example, some of them were juggling work and education because they had to meet financial responsibilities and perhaps had families to support. Others had prior behavioral challenges in traditional school environments and this school was one of their remaining options to earn a high school diploma. Still others had prior incarceration backgrounds and were coping with the challenges of returning to the community in addition to adapting to a school environment. I knew that I needed to go beyond academics to make a difference in the lives of these students so that they could be fully present in school. For instance, many of my students were uninformed about resources and services available to them so I made sure that I provided that information to them. Others lacked access to services that could ameliorate the impact of their complex life experiences so I began to conduct home visits to meet them where they were, assess their needs, and suggest alternatives. By supporting students holistically, providing wraparound services, and creating a safe environment, I contributed to their well-being. DELIVERED RESULTS:► Anchored individual and group advice on future goals to motivate students to overcome life’s challenges and focus on achievements to make better personal and educational decisions. ► Conducted voluntary home visits to understand life circumstances and recommend available programs and resources. ► Introduced and modeled essential skills and behaviors critical for acclimation in high school and beyond.
