College And Academic Counselor
CurrentAbout the organization: This is one of two high schools in the district; its enrollment in grades 10 to 12 is composed of 99% minority and 40% economically disadvantaged students. The school is organized into small learning communities focused on specific career fields, and over 75% of its graduates pursue higher education. I am the education and career advisor to ~350 students every year. I am proud to share that some of my students have attended prestigious higher education institutions and work in fields such as medicine, teaching, counseling, and culinary arts. I report to the vice president of the learning community. As a firm believer in the value of a true “open door policy,” I am only a text message or email away from my students. They know that they can reach out to me whenever they need to discuss personal, academic, and disciplinary issues without fear of negative consequences. They can truly be themselves and I encourage them to be authentic everywhere they go.With the right tools and models, they can succeed and think beyond today. DELIVERED RESULTS:►Adopted Google Classroom, direct messaging, and QR codes to set up appointments on Google Calendar and attain closer connection with Gen Z. ►Achieved parental participation rates ranging from 65% to 70% in financial aid workshops and built trust to share personal information to access scholarship opportunities. ►Challenged students and parents to think beyond today and map futures based on current and projected employment and income data for college graduates. ►Unveiled pathways requiring post-secondary education and uncovered potential majors and scholarship opportunities through career interest discovery sessions. ►Demystified college experience through realistic college life previews and discussions of what it takes to succeed.
