Lead Academy Strength & Conditioning Coach
Half way through studying my masters I had the opportunity of becoming a lead sport scientist/S&C coach for the academy in charge of U9’s - U18’s. My first full time role in professional football. My previous internships prepared me for this role and allowed me to be an effective team member enhancing player performances. I had the opportunity of creating a sport science curriculum for the academy to follow to enhance the athletic development of individuals. Unfortunately due to relegation of the first team I was made redundant within my role. • To actively improve sport science program and develop and manage the sport science curriculum from foundation phase, youth development phase and professional development phase• Delivery of prehabilitation sessions for U18s, create individual prehabilitation programs•Ensure that all U18s players are completing their Wellbeing questionnaire and assess their readiness to train and play• Attend U18 fixtures and observe all players to identify those that may require tailored individual performance plans in addition to their normal training and fitness regimes for their development phase• Monitor, periodise and assess daily and weekly training loading for U18s •Liaise with the Physiotherapist and assist the rehabilitation programs for injured players and return to training which can include gym and field based activities• Oversee and feedback to interns regarding their sport science services
Strength & Conditioning (Internship)
Alongside studying for my MSc in strength and Conditioning, I thought it was imperative that I found an internship and continued to gain experience within the field and put to practice. I also chose to continue to work within the youth population as i believe strength and conditioning is fundamental in the development of future success for a young athlete.Half way through my internship at Charlton I was fortunate to be offered a role at Barnet FC. - leading and assisting gym and off field strength and conditioning sessions to foundation and youth development phase age groups. - following the return to train protocol for players who are returning from their injury. - assisting with fitness testing - Recording all relevant data on PMA
Sport Science (Internship)
I was fortunate to gain this internship in my 3rd year of my undergraduate degree and continue to gain exposure from a professional setting. Due to previous internships I was confident delivering Strength and Conditioning session to U9's - 16's. This internship allowed me to be exposed to monitoring the workload of athletes, by using GPS and heart rate monitors something that I had not done previously.Downloading/analysing and creating training reports for the u18's squad from GPS playertek data and Pola - Conducting an 8 week horizontal plyometric training program on power, speed and agility delivered to the U18’ squad. - Leading warm ups to academy players ranging from u9's - u16's. - Hydration testing for the u23's squad.- Leading end of stage academy rehab sessions -assisting with u18's and academy S&C gym sessions - Assisting with academy fitness testing- Assist with match day packing ensuring that all nutritional requirements are available before and after a competitive game. - completing any duties that are required from the sport science department.
Strength & Conditioning (Internship)
This internship was a great experience to gain insight within a professional setting. I was fortunate enough to have picked strength and conditioning at university, which allowed me to transfer what I was taught to a practical setting. By observing other strength & conditioning coaches at Derby, I was confident to design a training session which was relevant to the physical syllabus to aid the development of players, with progressions being implemented each week. Furthermore, I knew that I wanted to gain additional experience within Strength and Conditioning to enhance my strengths and improve areas of improvement. -Assisting and leading strength & conditioning sessions on and off field to designated squads ranging from u9s - u16s as directed by Dhani Patterson -Analysing and reporting data to feedback to coaches regarding the physical capabilities of youth athletes. -Following a physical syllabus made my Derby County and coaching fundamental movements such as Back squat, overhead squat, lateral lunge- leading warm ups for u15's games - Assisting with performance testing as and when required.- Setting up training equipment as and when required- maintaining regular communication with the full time members of the strength & conditioning coaches.
