In addition to an advisory role, I serve as the implementation manager for the NSWC digital strategy which translates guidance offered by the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) into actionable technical programs, organizing stakeholders, tracking deliverables, and managing R&D investment resources to meet high level objectives. Some of the high-level achievements in this role are below: • Coordinated Research, Development, Testing & Evaluation (RDT&E) pilot projects for digital twin technologies, systems engineering, data analytics, and modeling and simulation processes for a portfolio of over $500K with team members from all ten warfare centers • Established a community of practice and interest for networking and knowledge transfer and workforce development in these technical areas • Led a team of 15 full-time SMEs executing over ten separately funded projects and coordinated efforts across these projects to achieve a common objective, minimizing duplication of effort • Defined and communicated project management plans for implementing digital strategy to senior leadership and the workforce through white-papers, presentations, meeting forums, and published articles • Provided urgent fleet support to address condition-based maintenance and collision avoidance following the 2017 Fitzgerald and McCain incidents • Wrote up detail assignment documents for several rotational assignments from NSWC to NAVSEA to aid the Navy Chief Engineer • Coordinated two hackathon events held in conjunction with academia and private industry • Participated in advisory panels for the selection of contract selection for digital pilots in conjunction with NAVSEA and the Digital Warfare Office (DWO) -
Naval ArchitectNaval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (Nswccd) Jul 2012 - Oct 2021Bethesda, MdI serve as a Naval Architect for the Structural Criteria & Risk Assessment Branch (654) at Carderock. In this role, I serve as an expert on ship design, and liaison between the structures, hydrodynamics and signatures departments. I review structural design criteria for surface ships, providing input into Design Data Sheet (DDS) 100-4, for flight deck structural design. I have participated in a submarine structural confirmation model test, serving as the principle draftsman responsible for detail drawings for testing apparatus and models. In this role, I also conducted an independent engineering assessment to confirm calculations from the rest of the team. I have utilized my expertise as a computer programmer to translate several DDS criteria documents into engineering tools using Visual Basic for Applications and later C++ and Fortran for ISDE. I have conducted two testing programs. One such test was a structural test assessing the capacity of a sandwich panel system to withstand ice-hull collisions, in which I developed a unique testing procedure to assess ice impacts in an ambient temperature laboratory. The second test program was a demonstration and capacity assessment for a self-deployed neutrally-buoyant soft robotic boom, a technology which was later implemented on the Disruptive Technology Laboratory (DTL) Forward Deployed Energy program. I serve as a senior engineer mentoring colleagues on ship design, model-based systems engineering, and computer science methods. -
Structural AnalystNaval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (Nswccd) Aug 2014 - Oct 2018Bethesda, MdI served as the NAVSEA subject matter expert on Arctic ice-hull interaction providing technical guidance on structural loading for design and analysis in Arctic operations for Naval vessels. In this role, I was engaged in the development of ICELOAD, the Navy’s ice-hull interaction analysis tool. Additionally, I conducted a benchmarking analysis to assess and validate ICELOAD against other proprietary analysis tools at the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Memorial University Newfoundland (MUN), and the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) run by the Army Corps of Engineers. I created a Community of Interest for structural analysis for Arctic operations with this community, NAVSEA, and the Office of Naval Research (ONR). I have provided training on structural analysis tools for ice to 4 Carderock employees for support of the Coast Guard Icebreaking Cutter Program. Some high-level achievements include:• Developed a user guide for ICELOAD, the Navy ice-hull interaction analysis tool • Established a Community of Practice with 7 SMEs from across the Navy, Coast Guard, academia and private industry to promote the technical exchange of information and address the multi-disciplinary issues associated with ice-hull interaction • I authored two technical reports discussing the technical products of the program for prosperity • Served on the Ship Structures Committee (SSC) panel for Ice-Hull interaction, offering an editor role on three SSC reports • I was an adviser on the Coast Guard Icebreaker Cutter Program, aiding the development of a program plan for the design of the preliminary ship structure and training other NSWC Carderock employees on the use of structural analysis tools for the effort -
Product LeadNaval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (Nswccd) Nov 2015 - May 2017Bethesda, MdI served as the Chief Architect & Product Lead of the Integrated Structural Design Environment (ISDE), a software development effort jointly sponsored by the Computational Research and Engineering Acquisition Tools and Environments (CREATE) program and internal investments. This effort produced a state-of-the-art software tool available on both PC and Linux, through local and networked high-performance computing (HPC) applications, to allow structural design and analysis for both ships and submarines. The software environment integrates legacy and new engineering tools and processes to improve efficiency and allow for enhanced structural analysis and design during all stages of the design process. As the Chief Architect, I was responsible for the development of the entire software architecture and design. As Product Lead, I lead the development team, maintained my role as Chief Architect, and was the program liaison with sponsors and stakeholders across the Navy and Department of Defense HPC communities. As Product Lead for ISDE, I have achieved the following: • Established a sustainable software development team• Served as a technical interviewer and provided hiring recommendations to my direct supervisor to expand the personnel resources for computer science• Facilitated bi-weekly scrum product management meetings • I built a stakeholder network across Carderock and the NAVSEA technical community for endorsement and input to the program • Oversaw the development of ISDE version 1.0 As Chief Architect for ISDE, I have achieved the following: • Designed the technical architecture for data exchange between various engineering tools • Expanded the technical capabilities available in LEAPS, utilized by all CREATE tools • Integrated ISDE with the workflow of other CREATE products (NESM, RSDE, IHDE) • Developed a standard modeling definition for ship and submarine structures to streamline software development of structural design tools -
Software ArchitectNaval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (Nswccd) Jan 2016 - Aug 2016I participated in a workforce development exchange with the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Newport Division in Newport, RI. In this exchange, I served as an architect for the Virtual Worlds Enterprise Solution (VWES), a virtual collaboration, design and simulation environment. I developed digital twin models of a variety of Navy platforms, aided with several customer simulations, and developed an automated method to import platform models from Rhino and Solidworks (common detail-level modeling tools used at Carderock) into the VWES. This development helped introduce higher-fidelity engineering modeling into the virtual environment. Some high-level achievements include: • Serve as the VWES expert at NSWC Carderock, mentoring and training other Carderock users on the tool • Assessed the business case for establishing a Carderock-centered VWES team supporting customers • Expanded the VWES technical capabilities to include automated integration with engineering-level modeling software to strengthen simulation outputs -
