About Nathan Hans
Continuous circles are my spirit animal. I take goals and break them down to actionable, measurable steps. Rinse and repeat. I am naturally optimistic. My can-do attitude helps me find a way forward. "How can I make this better" is my approach to work and life.Currently, as an IAM Administrator I am responsible for technology and processes for our access management program. PowerShell, Python, SQL, Confluence, and JIRA are my infinity stones. The smell of victory is the relief our team has when I create a script to replace some repetitive task. I love checklists in Confluence. Our 47 check daily/weekly/monthly checklists give us THE place for "how do we make sure this doesn't happen again." It is our lighthouse. I focus meetings and clarify problems. When I started on the Application Security team, the meetings were unfocused. When the Director of Software Technologies gave us 4 goals he wanted to achieve I sprang into action. Within 1 month I had an action list, a dashboard with 6 goal related charts, and an agenda for the meeting. I helped our developers determine their pain points and use our biweekly meetings to develop more securely while meeting business objectives. Our CISO invited our (relatively new) zero trust team to a meeting with many IT managers and directors on 2021 Zero Trust Planning with "no firm agenda." I led our team to ensure there WAS an agenda - one that facilitated conversation and allowed attendees to understand zero trust, ask questions, and express concerns. This resulted in a productive afternoon that helped clarify the direction of Zero Trust and concerns we would need to address along our path.Prior to the NYISO, I was in SEFCU's security team and before that I enjoyed 7 years as an "accidental" system administrator. While I was inexperienced, my work ethic and can-do attitude helped the team offload tasks they didn't want(patching and citrix farm management) and allowed me to learn, grow, and become an 'on-purpose' sysadmin. This position really helped me find my path in IT.Before I had a direction in my career my life has been driven by one goal above all: Be a good dad. I love my wife and kids. What a blessing they have been in my life. Camping, vacations, games, cooking, cleaning, yelling, arguing, all make life much richer from my front porch looking in. In April/May, You can find me up at 5am watching NBA Playoffs from the prior night. If you have a passion for IT, especially security and IAM, or NBA basketball - I'd love to talk, I hope you reach out. Be Well.

Senior It Security Specialist, Identity & Access Management
Its been a great two years at the NYISO.I have found a lot of success improving the day to day operations of the IAM program. I have excelled at identifying a problem and taking corrective actions to fix it. I have:Reduced a backlog of unauthorized change detections and account inventory "alerts". Implement a 25 check daily, weekly, and monthly checklist to ensure the right things are looked at the right intervals. This has been so vital for our 4 member team to ensure all 4 of us are doing things consistently and nothing gets missed(So important for compliance!). When items inevitably come up our team knows we can fix it by adding a check in our process. This avoids repeat issues.Used Powershell and Python to augment our daily checklists. I am not a fan of doing things over and over when a script can be whipped up to address it. My favorite so far has been writing powershell to take a CSV and craft emails for reviews. Saved SOO much time not having to craft 90 emails, copy/paste etc. etc.I've had a great time learning more SQL. I use SQL to generate reports and dashboards. Including modifying some of RSA's 12 Dashboards of christmas to fit our organization. If you don't measure it - it doesn't matter!I also use SQL to provide audit reports. These replaced screenshots which were time consuming and inconsistent.I run our application security meetings with great success. This was a great experience. I helped find focus of a bi-weekly application security meeting. I got to work with many talented developers. I created a bi-weekly dashboard to track and prioritize Third Party Vulnerabilities and Static Code Vulnerabilities. I worked with developers and management to provide focus at the meetings and get the "ball" rolling to allow for growth of the Application Security Team and Meetings.
