Nathan manages all forestry operations in the western South Carolina region for a major forestry consulting company. This includes client relations, forest appraisals, sales, inventory, administering reforestation practices including chemical site preparation and tree planting contracts, and general forest management. Clients include Timberland Investment Management Organizations, financial trust departments, and individual non-industrial forestland owners. Managed lands are enrolled in the Tree Farm Program, the Forest Stewardship Council, and in the Sustainable Forestry Initiative.

Initiated, developed and managed the Forest Utilization Department to develop markets for wood and forestry biomass. Supervised a staff of five professionals who worked to manage a variety of projects and initiatives.Economic development activities to grow the wood product and biomass industry in Georgia, including direct contacts, working tradeshows, presenting at conferences, and international business development missions. Completed fifty-five (55) wood and biomass supply studies in local areas.Provided information to developing bioenergy companies related to wood and biomass supply and procurement. Information was provided directly to individual companies and through specific developed publications as listed in my profile.Monitored the development of forest management certification and wood product certification systems and supervised services and workshop development to educate forest product industry members and landowners. Management (under contract) of two separate forest areas owned by the City of Atlanta totaling 20,000 acres. In addition, served as Water Quality Forester for a 15-county region performing Best Management Practice inspections and audits.

Facilitated forest research by assisting GFC Research Board with selection of appropriate projects for research funding and coordinating research actions with various universities and US Forest Service scientist. Promoted the use of wood in various new applications, such as engineered-wood bridges and treated southern pine products. Served as Biomass Energy Coordinator responsible for promoting use of new technologies that utilize wood for energy by: developing and disseminating technical information, maintaining a database of wood waste suppliers, administering several cost-share and grant programs for industries to establish biomass energy systems, and public presentations and media relations. Developed and managed the Brender Demonstration Forest.

I was responsible for increasing the reforestation rates in a 14-county area. I established a regional program to identify areas of reforestation needs, solicited investments in reforestation by landowners, and provide technical services to accomplish reforestation and continued forest management. I employed the following successful strategies: facilitated the establishment of community forestry committees; performed financial analysis of forestry investments for non-industrial landowners; organized and conducted landowner and vendor workshops involving herbicide use, tree planting and other common silivicultural practices; I coordinated reforestation logistics (seedling acquisition, mechanical tree planters, etc.); provided management plans for non-industrial forest owners; provided inspections for federal cost-share programs in forestry; and many instances of public speaking to civic and other organizations.
