As an avid cyclist, I understand the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I am lucky to be able to advise clients on the full range of healthcare regulatory legal needs so they can maintain healthy operations. I also know the critical importance of solving problems on the fly.In my practice, I regularly speak to clients - health systems, hospitals, specialized medical practices, mental health services providers, and universities – on federal and state regulatory compliance, fraud and abuse, self-referral prohibitions, privacy and confidentiality requirements, patient rights and clinical ethics, medical staff privileges, healthcare contracts, certificate of public need proposals, reproductive medicine, healthcare antitrust, HIPAA, EMTALA, healthcare professional education accreditation, advance directives, and Medicare, Medicaid, managed care and third-party reimbursement. Although I spend a lot of my time trying to prevent bad things from happening, much of my work involves helping providers resume operations after a patient, licensing, or data breach disaster or defending against allegations of wrongdoing. By providing effective and efficient legal counsel, I routinely become a trusted advisor for my clients. I am particularly passionate about ensuring that patient wishes are honored, particularly with end-of-life care. That’s why I founded National Healthcare Decisions Day (www.nhdd.org) in 2008. On April 16 each year, NHDD educates and empowers the public and providers about the importance of advance care planning.In my spare time, you can find me on the trails around Richmond and road racing or going on epic family vacations.
