My time writing 'Safe Operating Procedures' introduced me to the world of exploratory research. I quickly learnt to consider a wide-range of viewpoints. The best way to identify frustrations wasn't to sit in my office - it was to get out onto the workshop floor and watch the operators, ask them questions and try the tasks out for myself.I have taken this with me ever since - getting out there and fully understanding a problem before getting into solution mode.
