About Neil Appleton
My job objective is to begin my engineering career, ideally in robotics and automation, and continue to grow my engineering know-how. I can contribute my interpersonal communication skills & team work, programming expertise, as well as practical engineering skills and problem solving. I am very flexible on work assignment and willing to work anywhere in the US or Australia.During university, I work two part-time jobs for 15 to 20 hours per week, while studying full-time.Engineering & computer skills: 1. Robust, intermediate experience with SolidWorks & MATLAB/ C,C++ & Java Programming2. Practical, intermediate experience with lathe, CNC milling machines, soldering & welding3. Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint & WordQUT Engineering Thesis & ProjectsUsing vision as a sensor input, my thesis involved writing software (in C++) that can be used for autonomous robots navigating through an unknown environment, such as driver-less cars. I designed & wrote a path-planning algorithm that analyses successive digital picture frames, & detects obstacles (both stationary & moving) that should be avoided to prevent a collision. My algorithm first detects objects by “Optic Flow” means, which are then clustered, to make an object using DBSCAN clustering. It then contains a path planning routine which analyses all detected objects & determines a feasible trajectory to avoid the detected objects, while still heading in the chosen travel direction. In my third year soccer robotics project, I designed & constructed an algorithm to control a goal- scoring robot. This group project entailed designing & building a robot with custom parts using SolidWorks & coding the robot logic with Java & C++.During my first year project, our group project built a bridge with well-defined price & design constraints. All of these projects taught me team building, designing within constraints, project management & delivering projects on-time.
Listed skills include Robust Experience With Solidworks And Matla/ C And C++ Programming, Coaching, Mathematics, Management, and 10 others.

Senior Soccer Referee
FIFA Certified L3 Soccer Referee for junior and senior gamesLast season, I earned over $8000 last season reffing games and center-refereed over 120 games. From my 11 seasons, I have learned:1. Strong team communication skills: as refs work in teams of 3, we need to communicate well with one another to officiate and control the game effectively, as well as maintain safety2. Good time management: I am required to arrive an hour before a match starts and must ensure that each game starts on time, with my game schedule being far distances apart; 3. Impactful communication with others: it is vital to be able to talk to the players, coaches and spectators in an appropriate manner (and sometimes with a sense of humour); 4. Quick, fair decision making skills based on the rules of the game and what I see; and staying calm under pressure.
Engineering Intern
Engineering Intern, reporting to the business owner Feb 2016, Feb/June 2015, Feb / June 2014I designed and manufactured custom parts using a lathe and CNC milling machine. The parts also had to be cleaned and measured to make sure they were within tolerance. I learnt basic SolidWorks programming commands for the lathe and CNC milling machine, and taught myself TIG welding. Projects included prototype and small batch production parts. The materials used to make parts consisted of metals, such as steel and aluminium, and plastics.I built a custom storage materials rack. The design was made in SolidWorks, then cut using the CNC milling machine. The parts were then welded together using TIG welding.
