South America

After working 5+ years with Granite Construction and having just hit the 30's, a decision was made to go explore other parts of the world. Motivated by good health, curiosity, and anticipating a future family, I resigned from Granite in order to fly one way to South America. Time was on my side. Goals set included: learning to speak and write in Spanish, climb the highest peak possible, explore the amazon, volunteer my services in any way possible, live/work/snowboard in Argentina, and develop relationships through an enthusiastic cultural curiosity and adventure seeking mentality. 70 liter backpack packed, budgets set, travel method would be by bus and hitchhiking, sleeping arrangements were established at hostels or with the tent on my back, and to explore the local cuisines. Traveling through Peru, Chile, and Argentina I discovered a humbling lifestyle where cultures prioritize relationships, meals together, and generosity. With such open arms to an outsider, I was able to give back to a few of the communities in which I stayed. Through my travel my values became reinforced, that time and the people around us are the most treasured things we have. I am truly grateful to have had this opportunity, and will certainly be returning to South America in future travel destinations.
