San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission - Structures Inspector/Scheduler. The Construction of the Lathrop Wye Box Culvert consists of a double-barrel reinforced cast-in-place concrete box culvert. Box Culvert functions as an irrigation drainage ditch for farms receiving SSJID irrigation water and as a storm drain for approximately 10,210 acres of land in south Manteca and several regional municipalities. The culvert crossing is needed to support new wye connection tracks, which will curve over a portion of the canal. The tracks will be constructed as a part of future $200B rail extensions which could not start until this project was completed. The double-barrel concrete box culvert will have dimensions approximately 384 feet long, 30 feet wide, and 11 feet tall. Concrete wing walls and an apron will be constructed at the culvert’s inlet and outlet. In addition, riprap and rock slope protection will be placed around both ends of the culvert to protect canal slopes and soil from erosion.The culvert work area will need to be isolated and dewatered prior to construction. In addition, culvert construction will require a temporary water diversion system so that the construction area can be dewatered without disrupting irrigation and stormwater drainage. A temporary bypass line will be installed to divert water around the culvert work area.A temporary bypass pump will be installed upstream of the southern cofferdam to pump water out of the canal and around the work area, which will then outfall north of the downstream cofferdam. Erosion protection will be placed at the temporary outfall location.The Box Culvert Structure including excavation and backfill will be completed within 5 months.Update: The actual construction of the 384 feet long, 30 feet wide, and 11 feet tall double barrel structure itself didn't begin until August 12, 2024 and the entire box culvert with wingwalls and apron was completed by October 12, 2024.

California High-Speed Rail (CAHSR or CHSR) is a publicly funded high-speed rail system under construction in the U.S. state of California. Its goal is to connect the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center in Anaheim and Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles with the Salesforce Transit Center in San Francisco via the Central Valley, providing a one-seat ride between Union Station and San Francisco in 2 hours and 40 minutes, a distance of 380 miles (610 km). Future extensions (in Phase 2) are planned to connect southward to stations in San Diego County via the Inland Empire, as well as northward to Sacramento. It will be implemented in a number of self-supporting segments, as resources become available.

I provided Construction Inspection, performed Office Engineer duties, and reviewed the Project Baseline and all Monthly Schedule Updates. San Joaquin County had installed a temporary roundabout to help reduce vehicular collisions at the intersection of Byron and West Grant Line Roads. The success of the temporary roundabout led to the replacement of the existing facility with a permanent one-lane roundabout. The new facility will include enhanced features such as raised concrete medians and center island, a traversable concrete truck apron, street lighting, separated pathways for bicycles and pedestrians, and low-maintenance hardscaping. The project will be constructed in multiple stages and includes extensive traffic control, detours, and traffic shifts.

Veteran's Blvd Grade Separation: Structures Inspector - The City of Fresno and the California High-Speed Rail Authority (Authority), collaborated with UPRR to create the Veteran's Boulevard Grade Separation Project. The City awarded Ghirardelli Associates the CM Contract to oversee the $20 million contract utilizing funding provided by the Authority's project. I monitored the work which resulted in future six lanes for Veterans Boulevard; a Stem and Soffit Bridge Structure over existing UPRR and future High-Speed Rail tracks, and a roadway connection from Veterans Boulevard to future Golden State Boulevard. The overhead bridge structure has two spans at a total length of 300 feet and a width of 150 feet. The structure is a cast-in-place post-tension concrete box girder bridge, supported by two six-column Abutments on large 72" diameter cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) piles 72-feet deep and a center Bent of six columns on 96" CIDH piles 75-feet deep. Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) walls behind the abutments support the roadway embankment fills. I oversaw all phases of the bridge from the substructure, through falsework, to completion of the superstructure. The Project was completed on budget and on time.

Substantial utility and street improvements were needed in order to accommodate existing and alternative modes of travel in the neighborhoods.The Project was also designed to handle a future streetcar extension that will circulate along the Third Street corridor, jogging west to 5th Street and then east on C Street.Ghirardelli Associates was selected by the City of West Sacramento to provide construction management services for the Washington District project to correct infrastructure deficiencies. Architectural sidewalks were created, bike lanes added, and several roadways were widened for more efficient multi-modal traffic flow. New Sewer Mains, Water Main lines, High capacity Storm Drains were installed, and large street canopy trees were preserved while hundreds of new trees were planted. The Project included: Handling of numerous unknown buried utilities; Removal of Lead Contaminated Soil; Excavations through Historic and Culturally Sensitive Areas; Coordinating with Neighborhood Residents; New Signalized Intersections; New Roads, and Pavement Rehabilitation

Presidio Parkway Tunnel Tops Project $118M - I provided Quality Assurance Oversight: The Project consisted of a 14-acre park built on top of Presidio Parkway tunnels leading to the Golden Gate Bridge. It leaned heavily on public input for a community-minded transformation. Tunnel Tops furnished elements including benches, built-in seats, picnic tables, gates, and multiple playground features. In addition, it provided siding for some of the buildings. Construction work equipped the area with new buildings including a learning center, outdoor patio, restroom facilities and seismic upgrade for the historic Building 603. The project also included new roadways, curbs and bus pads, playgrounds, lawn, and picnic venues, viewing terraces and overlooks, and a community amphitheater.

This CALTRANS Federal-aid Project in District 3 rehabilitated 85.6 lane miles of roadway and included construction on State Highway Route 5 through Glenn County removing the top layer of I-5 and replacing with 126K tons of RHMA Gap Grade and 51K tons of RHMA Open Grade. Replaced approximately 11,800 LF of MBGR, over 800,000 LF of Thermoplastic Striping, and installed over 800 LF of new Concrete Barrier on and below eight bridges. Cold Plane Asphalt over 663K SqYds. Traffic Control for the Project incorporated multiple lane and ramp closures during 12+hour day and night shifts in less than 120 working days with COZEEP enforcement.

This project repaired the existing Atherton Channel by replacing it with a new “U” Channel with cast-in-place invert and shotcrete walls over 1800 feet long up to 12 feet high. The Atherton /Channel coveys storm water from the Town of Atherton to San Francisco Bay. The existing trapezoidal channel had stone and mortar walls and isolated on the east side of Marsh Road. The existing channel failed previously and is a heavily travelled two-lane roadway that accommodated 20K+ commuters daily between El Camino Real and US 101. Construction required extensive lane closures with flagmen controlling one-way traffic, full roadway closures, and long-term closures of the northbound lane. Also installed 1800 feet of new MBGR, Sewer Lining with Sewer Bypass System, significant SWPPP controls, worked with local residents and businesses during closures

2014 to 2016 - Assistant Resident Engineer. Wildlife Fence, Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA), Orange County, CA. This $8.5M project installed thirteen miles of Wildlife Fence (10-12 ft in height) along the SR-241 corridor between the 241/261 connector and the 91/241 connector. The work involved installation of galvanized fence fabric through Ecologically Sensitive Areas, with the base of the fence fabric buried several feet to discourage wildlife from digging underneath the fence. Unique Wildlife Jump-out Ramps utilizing CIDH Piles were also included within this alignment to add protection for deer, mountain lions, and the traveling public. The project work fell within Caltrans Right-of-Way and required multiple freeway lane closures and monitoring SWPPP to help ensure compliance with the Santa Ana RWQCB.The SR241 Wildlife Protection Fence Project was awarded the Environmental Engineering Project of the Year by ASCE Orange County. The project was also recognized by WTS-Orange County (Innovative Transportation Solutions Award), The International Bridge, Tunnel, and Turnpike Association (Toll Excellence Award – Social Responsibility), the California Association of Environmental Professionals (Outstanding Achievement Award), and the Orange County Engineering Council (Engineering Project Achievement Award).

2012 to 2014 - Kraemer Blvd. Grade Separation, Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), Anaheim, CA. Structures Inspector. This $70M Federally-funded project constructed a 127' steel-girder railroad bridge to accommodate two (2) existing railroad tracks and a future third track. The project required a shoofly during construction, and improvements to adjoining streets, commercial driveways, traffic signals, sewer and a storm drain. Also involved, was the construction of retaining walls to accommodate new roadway undercrossing. There were 7 retaining walls, ranging from 400' to 1000' in length set on CIDH Piles. The retaining walls were cast-in-place with a decorative architectural finish. I monitored work for federal reimbursement, performed daily site inspections to ensure compliance with codes, CALTRANS plans and specifications and wrote corresponding daily reports. Reviewed electrical submittals, scheduled 3rd-party special material testing inspections - utilizing survey instruments, metering devices, and testing equipment; measuring and recording pay quantities and time & material (T&M) work. Additionally, coordinated operations with utility departments and local businesses, maintained project records, submittal reviews, and project photos as delegated by the construction manager/resident engineer.

2010 to 2012 - Indian Canyon/I-10 Interchange, Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC), Palm Desert, CA. Construction Inspector. This $25.5M project reconstructed the Indian Canyon Drive interchange, on I-10 in Riverside County, and the City of Palm Springs. This project was two separate bridges as one had to be built complete, with traffic before the second bridge could be built. The improvements replaced the existing Indian Canyon Drive Bridge over I-10, widened Indian Canyon Drive from 11m to 34m, reconstructed the interchange ramps, signalization of the City’s intersections, ramp termini, and installed ramp metering. The existing bridge that over-crossed I-10 was demolished and replaced by a new over-crossing that was constructed using pre-cast concrete “bulb-tee” girders (span ~92 m). The project included jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP), hot-mix asphalt (HMA), and ramp termini. I monitored work for Federal reimbursement, performed daily site inspections to ensure compliance with codes, CALTRANS plans and specifications, performed quantity calculations, wrote corresponding daily reports, oversaw the installation of traffic signals, street lighting, traffic loops and video detection systems, signal interconnect system, lighting and sign illumination, and the removal of existing signal systems. Freeway closures and traffic control coordination were also involved. Scheduled 3rd-party special material testing inspections - utilized survey instruments, metering devices, and testing equipment, measured and recorded pay quantities, and time and material (T&M) work. Additionally, coordinated operations with utility departments and local businesses, and maintained project records as delegated by the construction manager/resident engineer. At Force Account, oversaw irrigation installation and planting of 25’ tall palm trees for local businesses on the Project.
