Co Coordinator

Rap Battles For Social Justice

Montreal, Canada Area

As a platform for political advocacy, the Rap Battles for Social Justice is an entertainment fundraising event that has tackled issues facing marginalized, oppressed communities. We organize live events and workshops that have covered topics from police brutality, gender justice, consumerism to climate justice and more. I’ve joined the coordinator’s team working part-time along with head organizer Dan Parker to prepare for and organize the Bloc Party! for Migrant Justice in April 2017 which drew hundreds of participants and included dance, live art, hip hop and poetry performances and a concurrent march. Since joining the team I have presented 5 workshops (including: Hip Hop & environmental racism, Hip Hop across the political spectrum, HH and its migrant roots to activism) and organized a panel discussion on Hip Hop & migrant justice. In February 2018, we planned and coordinated the Rap Battle for Representation. This was a fundraiser for Our Bodies, Our Stories, a queer youth art program, which was included over 20 artists and full backing band. Supported by Concordia Student Union and Sustainability Action Fund, we managed to raise close to $60,000 for the organization of these events (the overwhelming majority of which was disbursed to an marginalized artists, subject matter experts, and engaged non profits in the form of donations.)

Project Coordinator - Art Of The Story

Montreal, Canada Area

During my work with DESTA I have learned to become a real part of a team in my execution, planning and workflow. Over the span of four months, the Art of the Story collection has been engaged with through group discussions, movie screenings, Hip Hop/poetry writing and theater workshops exploring themes related to identity, community, race history and belonging. In each workshop, DESTA's participants had the chance to learn about Dr. Sandoval's history as well as her contributions and achievements as an integral part of Black Montreal's history. Managing a budget of 22,000 I was able to coordinate and facilitate workshop activities, artistic performances celebrating Black History Month, mixer events and galleries. Partnering with Black Theater Workshop and McGill's Social Equity and Diversity Education throughout the project, we were able to engage 38 participants in meaningful storytelling and artistic expression. Here's an online gallery of the project's artwork:www.artofthestory.ucraft.me
