Meet Nelson Ortiz, a dedicated professional and SME in Government Contracting and Corporate Supplier Diversity. As the Director (PI) of the LaGuardia APEX ACCELERATOR (formerly known as LaGuardia PTAC), located in Long Island City, Queens, Nelson spearheads initiatives to enhance business success in government contracting while championing diversity, equity, and inclusion within the supplier base at local, state, and federal levels.With his arrival at the LaGuardia APEX in 2020, Nelson has played a pivotal role in securing over $1.3 billion in government contracts for LaGuardia APEX clients, generating substantial employment opportunities and driving economic growth. Through strategic partnerships with government agencies and prime contractors, he has fostered an environment conducive to the growth and success of small, large, diverse-owned, women-owned, veteran-owned, and disadvantaged-owned businesses. Nelson provides invaluable guidance, counseling, and training to these organizations, empowering them in all aspects of government contracting.Prior to his current role, Nelson led the Global Supplier Diversity program for a Fortune 500 company in the private sector. There, he implemented strategic procurement objectives that led to significant increases in diverse spending across multiple lines of business. His efforts also leveled the playing field for diverse vendors, enabling them to compete for lucrative opportunities within a billion-dollar supply chain. Notably, Nelson provided crucial support to the CEO during congressional hearing testimony to the Chair of the Financial Services Committee in Congress, Maxine Waters, demonstrating his expertise and commitment to advancing supplier diversity.As a member of the Association of Procurement Technical Assistance Centers (APTAC), Nelson actively contributes to the field of procurement by serving on a committee. Additionally, he holds the esteemed position of President in his Alumni Chapter of Sigma Phi Rho Fraternity, INC., where he extends scholarships, mentorship, and inspiration to young individuals in the New York City area.
