Digital Signatures on NFC TagsMaster of Science ThesisThe mobile phone is more and more becoming our everyday tool, and new usage areas are constantly being investigated. Today we see trends where third party applications will be downloaded onto the phone, and where NFC tags provide pervasive data input to these same applications. However, the tags themselves are easy to remove and to fake. For some applications the validity of the data on the tags are a must, and for this reason NFC Forum is standardizing a signature protocol to ascertain the validity of the data contained in the tag.This thesis evaluates the feasibility of digital signatures on NFC tags by presenting the work and findings when implementing a draft version of the specification in a Java-powered mobile phone and by conducting performance measurements on it. Different signature algorithms have different performance properties. In this thesis the two main metrics measured and used for comparison are the execution speed and the signature size. As we know, performing cryptography on devices with constrained execution power can be time-consuming and at the same time, given the limited storage capacity of the tags, the overhead in space can also be significant.The result shows that it is feasible to do signature verification in this environment, however the choice of signature algorithm is important as there was a big difference in performance among the tested algorithms.
