I am a highly experienced former NGO environmental lawyer and campaigner with a particular interest in the environment/human rights nexus, corporate responsibility and sustainability. I have just completed a two year contract as Associate Director and Compliance lead of the Independent Project Accountability Mechanism at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, leading the environmental and social compliance investigations into over fifteen bank funded projects. Before that I was a freelance environmental legal policy consultant with mainly NGO clientele. Areas of expertise included: environmental corporate governance and accountability; climate litigation; international trade; campaign legal risk and defamation law. Prior to going freelance that I was at WWF for 20 years, most latterly as Campaign Advocacy Manager in charge of the responsible business conduct work stream of WWF’s Together Saving Our Shared Heritage global campaign. As Programmes Legal Adviser at WWF-UK for 10 years, I was responsible for providing strategic legal advice on a wide range of environmental subjects and campaigns. I have pursued a number of judicial reviews on behalf of WWF and was a lead member of the team who put together WWF’s OECD Guidelines complaint against SOCO International and a participant in the mediation process with SOCO. I am a co-founder, former board member and then Chair of the Corporate Responsibility (CORE) Coalition ( http://corporate-responsibility.org) working on UK company law and broader corporate accountability issues. I have particular expertise in the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and have represented WWF at a number of OECD meetings. I am a co-founder, current Board member and former Chair of the Legal Response Initiative – http://legalresponseinitiative.org/ - an award winning project which provides “real time” legal advice to NGOs and Lesser Developed Countries at the climate negotiations. I have also been General Counsel, Executive Assistant to the Chief Executive, Manager of the Markets and Economic Governance team, and Biodiversity Policy Officer at WWF-UK. Prior to WWF I spent a number of years in private practice in the UK as a commercial environmental lawyer. I am originally from New Zealand , having worked as a natural resource management lawyer in both private practice and government.
