As a kid, I did what all children do and played with FileMaker Pro on the family computer. I enjoyed learning and using the software as well as managing complex data. (At this age, “complex data” meant discography info from my favorite bands.) While those normal childhood days got left behind, those equally normal hobbies carried over into my work life.My Chargeback Specialist role expanded to include data research and inventory reports, the two functions I delighted in most. For research, using the company’s mainframe and software to hunt for information could be a puzzle. If card data didn’t process normally, I’m the one called upon to figure out what happened, or determine if anything happened at all, so that I could explain it to my colleagues. The more elusive and complex, the more interesting and exciting!Inventory reports, on the other hand, provided familiarity and stability. The numbers fluctuate, especially during the busy seasons, but the processes were often the same. Pay attention to detail, research if anything appeared to be missing, use the correct formulas, check for errors, and make the information presentable. Some may call it monotonous, I call it absorbing. Is that not why I spent hours cataloging CDs as a child?
