Major responsibilities included establishing part conformance to FAA approved specifications, production of engineering drawings for use in system documentation and support of flight testing operations. My support of flight testing operations included planning ballast weight placement and restraint for the desired CG locations for each test flight. I also supervised and documented the ballast loading for the first two phases of flight testing. Along with ballast configuration, I was also responsible for planning the installation of foam shapes at key location on lifting and stabilization surface leading edges to simulate ice buildup during flight. Engineering drawings were produced for both tasks in order to document installations were in compliance with FAA standards. My final role in flight testing was riding along as an observer during a baseline test flight. The specific test flight was conducted to test aircraft handling and stall characteristics in clean air with all new ice protection systems installed.Minor responsibilities related to flight testing included the design of an ice fence for viewing ice buildup during flight, and using AutoCAD to produce CAD models and dimensioned drawings of the individual parts and their installation locations. My involvement in the project provided me with a broad understanding of the processes necessary to certify new systems on a legacy aircraft and the level of detail required by the FAA for STC applications. I also added to my flight test engineering knowledge from college coursework through the observation both in the air, and on the ground of the many operations necessary to conduct a safe and effective flight test. Along with design and manufacturing concerns, I also worked to define and model an optimum flight path for the designed perching vehicle. The project included the design of three prototypes with two being built and tested. I devoted a large amount of time to research on the aerodynamic requirements for the vehicle before and during the design process. A major challenge was remaining within a weight budget while keeping costs and complexity low. Rapid prototyping methods including CNC and 3-D printing processes were implemented to reduce build time. Show less
