Freshman year, I joined SHOP, a club that pairs student grocery shoppers with homebound elders. Through SHOP, I developed a passion for forging intergenerational connections and helping elders live independently. Since sophomore year, as club leader, I have recruited, trained, and matched students with seniors and spread awareness of our services as an invited speaker on local television, at senior living facilities and at a statewide senior services conference. In my junior year, SHOP became the largest club at BHS, providing 1000+ shopping days per year. Junior and Senior year, I organized a “Senior-Senior Prom.” I solicited local businesses for donations of food and flowers and received grant money. We decked the prom room with tablecloths and intergenerationally-themed decorations. On prom day, 55 seniors and 20 students dined and danced to music spanning Sinatra to Beyoncé. I am proud that the town of Brookline sees SHOP as an important part of its social services.
