Upsolve is a tech-driven nonprofit that helps low-income Americans overcome debt and rebuild credit at scale. Upsolve was founded in Harvard Law School’s Access to Justice Lab in 2016. Since then, Upsolve has become the nation’s most visited nonprofit financial education site. Upsolve.org educates approximately 2.9 million people a year with over 2,000 articles on debt and credit. To date, Upsolve’s free bankruptcy filing tool has been used by 14,000 families to relieve $600 mn in debt. Upsolve users are disproportionately Black and Brown with an average household income of $25,000. Upsolve is now expanding from bankruptcy to bankruptcy prevention with Upsolve Assist, an AI-powered Financial Assistant for low-income Americans. Upsolve Assist helps you understand your best path out of debt and poor credit and, wherever possible, takes action for you. Freshman year, I joined SHOP, a club that pairs student grocery shoppers with homebound elders. Through SHOP, I developed a passion for forging intergenerational connections and helping elders live independently. Since sophomore year, as club leader, I have recruited, trained, and matched students with seniors and spread awareness of our services as an invited speaker on local television, at senior living facilities and at a statewide senior services conference. In my junior year, SHOP became the largest club at BHS, providing 1000+ shopping days per year. Junior and Senior year, I organized a “Senior-Senior Prom.” I solicited local businesses for donations of food and flowers and received grant money. We decked the prom room with tablecloths and intergenerationally-themed decorations. On prom day, 55 seniors and 20 students dined and danced to music spanning Sinatra to Beyoncé. I am proud that the town of Brookline sees SHOP as an important part of its social services.
