About Nicholas Beard

After exiting school with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, I started my exploration of what I "want to be when I grew up?" It's a tough decision. One that we actually do not need to pick once and we are done. I am glad I chose a BSME - I have explored process improvement at a manufacturing company. I have explored Bio-tech, Big-Pharma, specifically container science and device test method development for various types of regulations. In my years of work, I have expanded and grown my managerial skills to efficiently manage and mentor people in their own careers. I am beginning to understand what I want to do "what I want to be when I grow up". I would like to be an engineering manager. I enjoyed the responsibilities as a manager - Someone who can coach and mentor a team, working to gain goals and success together. I also enjoyed the technical, theoretical and troubleshooting discussions with my teammates. I enjoyed prototyping ideas and testing with all levels of attack to prove a design was fit for use. I enjoy viewing a process or manufacturing for potential improvements, troubleshooting and problem solving. I have some experience in this and have found great enjoyment in it!

Listed skills include Solidworks, Microsoft Office, Matlab, Finite Element Analysis, and 37 others.

General Engineer

Technical Trouble Shooting, Inc

Valencia, Ca

Three main hats to wear: Manufacturing Engineering - involving creating job process control documentation, creating instructions, quality control, training others to follow procedures, and overall continuous improvement on the shop floor. Project Engineer - Problems are found everyday. I find the issues, understand the system and any solutions. Pick the best solution and execute. Test. Repeat problem-solving process. Each project is different: designing fixtures and tooling, software related instruction manuals to overcome new updates, organizing the shop to run more efficiently/clean. When I have a laser engraver unit to build for a customer, I own the project. I talk with the customer, understanding their needs, wants and what I can provide for them. Gathering up details and schedules to make the customer happy and want more work from me.Manager - I train and lead the owners of the company in Lean Manufacturing techniques. Its a minor role, but a role that I have taken upon to improve the company. Its a very large project, one that I hope to see continue on with the energy of everyone working at the company. For now, I manage a small group of employees in maintenance routines, quality checks, process controls, and jobs that are given to the interns.I provide process engineering, project management, data analysis and consulting services around continuous improvement to design and improve processes on the shop floor. Projects typically involve measuring and analyzing current performance; improving operational efficiency, productivity, and performance. I will also identify and implement new processes and equipment across departments as needed. With my experience with machining, i will step in and help with production when needed. however, there will always be a way to improve!

Logistics Engineer/Driver

Formula 1 Sae - Csun 2015 Team

California State University, Northridge

Once my original job was done as jig table designer, I focused on repairing and improving the Team trailer and tools. Without these in proper working order, the entire team's effort would have never made it to competition. The heavy duty trailer - 7000 pound capacity had 4 electric brakes, none in which worked. tires in poor shape, paint peeling and hardware overall in terrible condition. Using my skills and self-motivation, I repaired damaged sections of the trailer with limited spending, cleaned and painted the trailer in the school colors. With one more person's help, finished the trailer before driving 3000 miles to competition where we not only had the coolest loking car, but our tools, our orginization and trailer where examples for others. I hope to return to school one day to see the trailer in good shape still. but with a lack of responsibility, who knows.

Lead Jig Engineer

Formula 1 Fsae - Csun 2015 Team

Cal State Northridge , Ca

Part of a sub team of Chassis, I am the incharge of the design and manufacting of the jig to assemble the chassis and other parts of the formula car once the designs are complete. Last year's jig is simply a steel frame in which more sections of pre determined steet is welded to the top and a bracing and brackets are welded to that inorder to make a jig supporting each piece. I am in the process of designing a jig that will have a higher accuracy than the previous years, and be more versible. The jig is the first to be designed and first to be manufactured in order to accomedate the Chassis which is the last to be designed, but first to be built.

Team Leader

Me 330 Machine Design

Cal State University Of Northridge

I was the team lead for a group project in a class. ME 330 Machine Design- Proffessor G. Youssef. This course incorperates material strengths, dynamics, stress analysis and new knowledge taught throught the semester. The project lasted the entire semester. A requirement sheet was given showing the exact details that a "customer" would have for a engineering firm. As engineers, we were to synthesize and design, present the idea in a PDR. Then go thru the full detailed design analysis, design for manufacturability, cost analysis, strength and fatigue analysis and finally present the finished product in a CDR. A final paper was also written. The entirety of the class and everything that was learned in previous classes is shown in the results of the project.

Team Leader

Me 386 Finite Element Analyis -Csun

Cal State University Of Northridge

I was the team leader for a large group of fellow engineering students for our class. ME 386 Finite Element Analysis teaches the concepts of FEA. Solidworks was the primary software used and for a full semester project, our team decided to use the software to understand the design of a drum brake. Scheduling and planning the group's combined effort to finish the project was my job. However, the understanding of the machine's working is my field. By explaining the machine at the engineering level to the group and later to the class, we were able to properly model the drum brakes and run thermal heat analysis to explain the amount of energy transformed to heat while braking, Non-linear static analysis to understand why the material of the casing and brake material is used, and a frequency analysis or nodal analysis to help explain the toughness and fatigue life of the part.
