Profile bio

About Nicholas Castillo

I have PhD in Earth Systems Science with a focus on aquatic ecology, ecotoxicology, applied methods in risk assessment, and natural resource management. As a trained ecologist and ecotoxicologist, I aim to understand the interplay of natural and anthropogenic stressors to fisheries, aquatic and marine ecosystems, and ecosystem sustainability and function to provide for informed and effective management and conservation of natural resources. My research is highly collaborative, coproduced in partnership with community stakeholders, governmental and non-governmental agencies, and recreational and professional anglers, and is aimed at understanding questions related to both applied and traditional ecology and ecotoxicology. I have extensive experience designing, managing, and conducting field-based research throughout the US and Caribbean. I work closely with state and federal regulatory agencies and have extensive experience in state and federal permitting and executive research report writing, actively maintaining 10 research permits and IACUC approval. I focus on monitoring the presence and pathways of contaminants in aquatic systems on large spatial scales, assessing the potential for adverse effects in exposed biota and humans, identifying pathways of exposure in mesoconsumer fish with a multicompartment approach, and assessment of contaminant and pollution prevention methods. I apply ecology and ecotoxicology to achieve actionable science with collaborative interagency and community-based stakeholder engagement and incorporate science communication with the public at large via media outreach, seminars, public hearings, podcasts, and TV shows. My goal is to extend my study of multicompartment pharmaceutical and anthropogenic contamination and determination of adverse effects in exposed biota to assessing the potential for adverse effects in natural systems to understand the interplay of natural and anthropogenic stressors to ecosystem sustainability and function, subsequently providing for informed and effective ecosystem management. Ultimately, I aim to utilize my experience in research design, data management and statistical analysis, formal and scientific report writing, science communication and public engagement, risk assessment of contaminants to aquatic and terrestrial systems and human health, ecology, and ecotoxicology to effectively fulfill a role in a governmental regulatory agency, private industry, and scientific research.
