I have multiple responsibilities as the managing editor, including but not limited to: 1) Overseeing daily operations and a staff of over 120, including a dozen skilled editors who make up our leadership team.2) Leading recruiting efforts, and since May, I've accumulated more than 100 student applications for the publication — enough to make us close the application portal for the first time in years — after speaking to classes, working with administrators to send out email blasts to the student body, advertising in-person around campus, and more. Each application requires at least a resume and two essay questions, and some positions require a portfolio. 3) Overseeing the writing desks and the content being published. This semester, the writing desks were left in a unique position — many of the skilled, established editors were leaving to pursue other passions or because they graduated. Many of the vital portions of the publication — such as the news and life & arts desks — were being led completely by new editors who had to be taught from the ground up. That is my job, and in just a few weeks, we've recruited dozens of students to fill the writing roles and worked together to train them efficiently. While still a work in progress as of writing, I've taught the new staff the essentials of leadership at The Battalion, including AP Style, how to train and lead a desk, how to find stories and assign them, how to edit not just for grammar but also content, and more. Beyond this, every story from every desk must be edited by me before going live on the website or print. I edit for strict AP Style and content, formatting, and style.Ultimately, I work to keep the student newspaper running.
