My credentials include a Ph.D. in Zoology with specialization in genetics from the University of Western Ontario, four years of postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Professor Jeffrey Palmer at Indiana University, ten years as Assistant Professor at elite Liberal Arts colleges, and more than thirty-five years of experience in the software field both as a programmer and manager. My Ph.D. research was in the areas of biochemistry, molecular and quantitative genetics, and molecular evolution as applied to the study of the regulation of the oxygen-derived free radical detoxification pathway in mice. During my postdoc I focused on research in molecular evolution, phylogenetics, and bioinformatics. I have funding from a the National Institutes of Health valued at $552,000 to study intron evolution. Other awards include an Education and Research Consortium of the Western Carolinas grant “Development of Biotechnology at Furman University” valued at $725,000. Particular areas of expertise include (i) exploitation of existing nucleotide databases and creation of new databases as research tools to study non-coding DNA sequences, specifically introns, including their origin, function, phylogenetic and genomic distributions, and mutations; (ii) phylogenetic reconstruction as applied to the evolution of gene families; and (iii) comparative genomics.In addition to the supervision of student researchers at all levels of sophistication, I have extensive experience with undergraduate and graduate teaching in general biology, genetics, molecular biology, molecular evolution, bioinformatics, and genomics and would be well qualified to teach in these and related areas. I also have considerable expertise in internet-based instructional methods and pedagogy. Furthermore, the nature of my research allows me to involve undergraduates in a variety of exciting laboratory and computer-based projects in genetics and molecular biology, and evolution.
