I support non profits, trade unions and purpose-led organisations in responding to the digital and AI age.As a senior digital leader for more than 15 years, I worked with third sector organisations as diverse as Médicins Sans Frontières, UNISON and the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) to understand their goals; explore the possibilities digital and AI offers for achieving these goals; and map and deliver the changes they needed to succeed. For my work building a digital team at UNISON I was listed in the Digital Leaders 100 list in the UK while at ODI my digital strategy was awarded Digital Strategy of the Year at the European Digital Communications Awards.Since 2021 I've been working as a consultant while undertaking an Executive MBA programme at ESADE Business School in Barcelona. Through this role, I've undertaken projects at national and international non-profits – including Concern UK, Oxfam, the International Science Council and Family For Every Child – learning more in the process about the challenges they face in developing and realising ambitious digital vision in non-profits. The task is complicated: success requires profound transformation in technology, people and processes and I've worked with my clients to understand how best to respond in their particular context and for their particular goals. How is digital / AI impacting your organisation and its progress towards its mission already? How might it in future and how might you respond? I'd relish the opportunity to work with you and find out.

Head Of DigitalMédicos Sin Fronteras Sep 2017 - Oct 2021Barcelona Area, SpainAt MSF, I built up a new digital team focused on driving innovation in digital engagement for MSF in Spain – an NGO with 500,000 regular donors and €100m in donation income. In my time, the digital function grew from 2.5 to 11 people – each bringing specific skills under a “T-shaped” model. It counts experts in product management, analysis and optimization, online advertising, marketing automation, content design, community engagement and supporting MSF missions in the field.I led an internal innovation and digital transformation programme, focusing on user experience; digital data; technology infrastructure; and our internal digital mindset, skills and culture. Achievements of the programme include:- The "hybrid" team working structure, with digital team members directly developing the digital maturity of partner teams within the departments they work closely with.- Trials of new management processes, including a vision, mission and values process and the implementation of an Objective & Key Results (OKR) model.- Several digital engagement products, including a chatbot on mental health created during the COVID-19 lockdown and used 100,000+ times; and Regala Salud, our first 100% online product is a source for 100,000€+ in donations yearly.- Increased use of design thinking, including a User Personas study or regular design sprints. This has led to a programme to acquire regular donors through Facebook Messenger (a first in Spain) and a new social media strategy (doubling user engagement in Facebook) and website (delivery in 2021).- A series of input papers for the 2020-2023 organisational strategy, focusing on digitalisation and transformation for the digital era.I was a founding member of the Global Digital Steering Committee, a group of 5 building digital transformation of the MSF movement. Through this forum, I directly led multiple change initiatives, including developing a single global Facebook structure and MSF’s first global fundraiser. -
Head Of DigitalUnison Jul 2014 - Aug 2017London, United KingdomAt UNISON, a UK trade union serving 1.3 million members, I built the first digital team, recognised by Digital Leaders as one of the 100 leading digital teams in the UK in 2017 (theDL100).A core priority was winning senior leadership support for a change programme focusing on how the union engages members in the digital era. This two-year programme included:- Piloting new digital journeys to support representation, membership engagement and democracy. An online ballots programme increased turnout by around 30%.- Kicking off technology projects to ensure digital systems delivered against changing member needs. A new Join UNISON form and related APIs development project kicked off by a design sprint I convened with internal stakeholders. Since it launched, conversion rates have risen substantially, acting as a key catalyst for union growth. - Leading the rollout of new engagement platforms for HQ, regions and branches. A new Wordpress web platform has replaced many existing national and regional websites and dozens of branch websites. - Developing a training programme and the digital.unison knowledge-sharing site to support staff and volunteers. Alongside this, I was a manager in the union's national communications team, developing marketing and communications strategies to recruit new members, retain existing members, and get members more active in UNISON’s work. - Recruitment: I provided strategic direction on the national Public Service Champions and member recruitment campaigns, developing web, email and social media campaigns. - Advocacy: I led the development Votr 2015– a Tinder-inspired advocacy app that fed into personalised email journeys and went on to win TUC prize for the best membership communication.- Member engagement: I conceived and delivered digital prize draw as incentive for members to update their details – 136,000 members participated as a result. -
