Configuration Management

Current

Darmstadt Area, Germany

The multi-national Configuration Management Team at EUMETSAT is tasked to provide configuration control for both operational meteorological satellites and EUMETSAT controlled ground stations. I am tasked with the creation, modification, update and version tracking of Documentation CI’s (management and technical documents, including Spacecraft/Ground Segment operational procedures, manuals and guides), H/W CI’s (computers, infrastructure, Comms equipment), S/W CI’s (including S/W applications, COTS and associated Licences, etc) plus keeping up to date the mapping between S/W and H/W CI’s. I am also tasked with the review and proposal of improvements to existing applicable EUMETSAT Configuration Management As-Built and As-Designed processes. This involves liaising with colleagues across the EUMETSAT community. Excellent daily business/office administrative duties are also required to support the main function of the team.Another part of my role is the support of Micro Focus Dimensions tool for the entire EUMETSAT user community. This role includes day-to-day maintenance as well as implementing updates to the tool where required as well as managing full verification and validation testing for these updates. User support both second and third line is one of my responsibilities. I have designed multiple VB.NET / C# applications that automate many processes within Dimensions lifecycles. I also design and maintain many VB.NET / C# applications that produce reports as well as GUI applications that allow users to find and manipulate information that would not be available to them using just the Micro Focus Dimensions Tool. I have been involved many sub projects within the team most recently a project to move our existing Dimensions live and development instances to new infrastructure and also a proof of concept project looking at a potential replacement for Dimensions using Micro Focus Solutions Business Manager (SBM).

Feb 2012 - Present

Configuration Controller

Munich Area, Germany

The main function I performed in this team was the control of Configuration Items within the TP400 System Configuration Management Database (CMDB). The TP400 System Configuration Team provided configuration support to system engineers from MTU, Europrop and Rolls Royce working on the Europrop International TP400-D6 engine used to power the Airbus A400M military transport aircraft.I was tasked with ensuring that all CI’s within Micro Focus Dimensions were at the correct status and correct relationships were maintained as well as creating various baselines between and at key Milestone Gates. We followed Avionics Standards DO254 for our day-to-day Change Control processes for Documentation and handling Problem Reports (for HC1 Level Documents) and Change Requests between our External suppliers and Internal System Requirements teams. I was also tasked with producing a System Configuration Index, which was an internal, and customer facing document that detailed the current version, status etc of key System CI’s. In addition, I also assisted with Requirements Management duties within IBM Rational DOORS, which included a range of activities from first line support to writing simple DOORS eXtension Language (DXL) scripts. As the configuration lead within the team, I worked closely with the Configuration Manager to enhance existing processes as well as implementing new processes where the need arose. I also regularly deputised for the Configuration Manager within senior management meetings discussing new policies to help drive the TP400 project forward. As part of the configuration team I also provided training/coaching for the project on all the system configuration procedures as well as Dimensions tool training. I also produced many internal VBA tools, which automated many repeated tasks that needed to be performed on a daily / weekly basis.

Configuration Manager

Luxembourg

My initial role brief was to continue to provide Configuration Management services to the European Commission’s Taxation and Customs Union Directorate-General (TAXUD-DG). The Bull IT Service Management Team provided IT Management Services to the 27 European Member States as well as providing support directly to TAXUD-DG.I was also tasked with implementing new processes, procedures and a new CMDB. During my first 4 months in the position, I successfully implemented a new CMDB solution using the open source tool OneCMDB. This entailed gathering requirements from internal and external parties to define a CMDB model that met all relevant requirements. This process also involved migrating existing CMDB information from a legacy MS Access CMDB to the new CMDB. It also provided a more robust hosting solution to allow secure access for users and sufficient backup facilities.Alongside the new CMDB implementation, updated Configuration Management Processes were required. Working closely with the team technical author, I re-wrote all the Process, Procedure and Policy documents to reflect ITIL standards and to provide effective links to the Change and Release Management disciplines.I was also involved in Proof of Concept activities regarding the implementation of a new service management tool and was part of the team tasked with modelling the tool to fit existing processes and procedures.

Configuration & Release Analyst

Leeds, United Kingdom

As a member of the Release and Configuration (RAC) team my main priority was to provide software environment content assurance to internal BT and external ‘NHS Connecting for Health’ (CfH) Test and Release Managers. This entailed daily CMDB impact assessment, and controlling both HW and SW Configuration Items and Change Objects throughout their lifecycle within HP BTO culminating in environment content presentations.Initially, I was tasked providing QA for software releases into the Spine Definitive Media Library. This involved customer and supplier meetings as well adherence to strict configuration control procedures to ensure software releases met agreed quality standards. Within this role, I was also involved in further developing the DML tool, Micro Focus StarTeam, to meet ever-growing requirements. In conjunction with colleagues from the BT London CM Team, I helped implement a solution that aligned both team’s StarTeam instances therefore creating joint working practices that increased the overall productivity of both teams. This role developed into the environment content assurance function with my responsibilities also becoming supervisory with accountability for maintaining configuration control for all software and source code within the DML.Another area of my role was to set up and maintain the end-to-end tracking of ‘Non Service’ Change Requests. This new process involved managing changes to Environments that were not in service to track all software changes that occurred. I would also perform audits against key CM Baselines to provide assurance that environments were built to correct standards. The customer-facing element of this role involved environment build reporting at key Test, Service Delivery and Release Management Milestone Gates. The Gates were underpinned by direct duties such as environment build monitoring as well as providing environment content build targets (planned content projections) and Implementation and CM records.

Configuration/Change Analyst

Leeds, United Kingdom

I was involved in helping to set up new Configuration Management processes for the NHS Spine Programme. In addition to this, my main area of responsibility was running the Low Level Change (LLC) Control Process, which aimed to control documents linked to a Release Product Breakdown Structure (PBS). This work involved setting up a Micro Focus StarTeam instance for this project and defining an effective lifecycle in which to manage Low Level Changes. The work with the LLC process involved many activities including: • Managing LLC’s through their lifecycle.• Chairing LLC Board Meetings with the various change stakeholders.• Creating Configuration Baselines.• Providing weekly feedback at Release Board meetings.• Supporting Micro Focus StarTeam users in managing their changes.

Configuration Tools Analyst

Leeds, United Kingdom

I contributed towards the successful development, implementation and support of various technical solutions used across the NHS Spine Programme. The main goal of the team was to migrate existing processes into the Micro Focus Dimensions tool. The three Programme Office processes migrated to Dimensions were:• Business Change – A customer facing process that required full process control of CCN’s throughout the business. This enabled CAB meetings to be held virtually freeing up resource and facilities. • Document Management – A highly visible process throughout the project, we needed to provide a solution that could help both store and version control documents but would also provide document review process capabilities.• Resource Management – A solution that allowed Resource Management to accurately manage both permanent and contract resource on the project.I was mainly responsible for both the Business Change and Resource Management solutions being migrated to Dimensions. This meant managing not only requirement gathering but also translating those requirements to Dimensions by creating effective lifecycles, attributes, relationships between objects and building and testing the solutions. As a team, we would provide not only technical support for Dimensions but would also provide training for the Dimensions user base.Other duties I was responsible for within the team were:• Requirements, Development and Implementation of various MS Access Databases including a Risks & Issues database and an Interim Document Management database.• Creating detailed Crystal Reports for various teams as per requirements.• Creating complex SQL queries that help produce reports based on customer requirements.• Complete general system administration duties.• Liaising with both customers and suppliers regarding various tools.
