On-car areas of responsibility cover hydraulics, transmission, inboard braking systems (active and passive), driver controls, steering-wheel configuration and driver-torque-demand mapping. In-depth knowledge of the Standard ECU (SECU) and standardised software versions, as well as hardware systems of a contemporary F1 car.Attend all race and pre-season testing events, working very closely with Race Engineering, Systems Engineers and mechanics at the track, as well as working with the Engineering Office and other factory-based departments outside of a race weekend.
Control Systems Test Engineer
This role was primarily to support dyno and subsystem testing, from pass-off of hydraulics system components up to full engine and gearbox dyno tests. This role served to bridge the gap between factory and race team controls operations, by being a key point between the two in the preparation and delivery of items. This also saw me working closely to support trackside engineers on race weekends, through data analysis, fault follow up and tool development. Lastly, I was first reserve trackside engineer, which saw me running a car during in season testing.
R&D Engineer
Role largely revolved around developing GUIs in MATLAB or macros in VB for more generic tasks and data analysis of testing to generate results for one off tests. Another key element was taking on R&D projects, which in my time centred around development of instrumentation methods, owning all aspects of the project from dealing with suppliers, designing any rigs/jigs/fixtures required through to testing and analysis.
Trackside Electronics Engineer
Secondment to cover before a permanent new starter took up the role. Responsible for multiple aspects of on car software configuration, including sensor calibrations, loading data versions into the car, setting session details and setting driver switches and driver defaults ahead of sessions. I assisted in car build, primarily looking after on car wiring and electronics installations.
Development Engineer
Highly varied role where a can-do attitude and a wide range of competencies were essential. Working on OEM, off highway and motorsport applications, this role saw me involved in proof of concept, sub-assembly through to full system testing of mechanical transmission high speed flywheel KERS, working on mechanical components, control system development and validation/calibration. Required knowledge of hydraulic systems, automotive wiring, data logging and ECU calibration for the operation of the systems as well as strong fundamentals of the mathematics/physics for analysis. Supported the installation and first running of a system with a car manufacturer and contributed heavily to the first hybrid car to run in LMP1 at Le Mans.
