About Nick De Louw
During my time as a professional football player, as well as in the process of chasing this childhood dream, I learned how to work in teams and to push myself to the limit every day, to reach my full potential. Driven by my passion for the interesting world of physics, and supported by the eagerness to learn and a great amount of self-discipline, I was able to combine this football career with my scientific career for a long time. My particular interest in photonics, which was boosted by the internship experiences, translates into the desire to aid in the development and application of this promising field of physics.

Research Intern
I performed my graduation project of the Master’s program in the Optics & SXR Metrology group at ASML. During this internship I conducted research on applying integrated photonics (optics) in semiconductor metrology, by contributing to the feasibility study of a first photonic integrated circuit (PIC) sensor design. For this feasibility study I performed experimental characterization measurements on the PIC sensor design by using fiber coupling and beam profile measurements. Additionally, I developed a theoretical model for a specific photonic component (grating coupler) and performed Lumerical simulations to benchmark the performance of this model. The graduation project was graded with an 8.5/10.
R&D Intern
During this internship at the R&D department of SMART Photonics I investigated the relationships between the composition of the III-V semiconductor alloy AlGaInAs and the metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy (MOVPE) reactor settings and the material properties. Therefore I analysed the results of multiple characterization measurement methods, such as ellipsometry, photoluminescence and X-ray diffraction. Furthermore, I performed step height measurements on the wafer samples. By analyzing all the results, relationships between the composition and the reactor settings and material properties were identified. Besides working on my own project, I also got the opportunity to gain insight into the other research work that was going on at SMART Photonics. The internship was graded with an 8.5/10.
Professional Football Player
In August 2018, I signed a two-year contract as a professional football player at Helmond Sport (second level national football, “Eerste Divisie”). During my years in the first team, I played 39 official matches as a defender for Helmond Sport, scoring 2 goals. Being member of the first team implied that, besides the commercial and social activities, you conduct six training sessions and one match per week on average. I combined my professional football career with the Bachelor study Applied Physics, before I decided to pursue my scientific career in June 2020. Nevertheless, it has been a valuable experience which also helped to develop my soft skills and gain a lot of self-discipline and resilience.
Football Player
In 2007, I was scouted by the professional football club Helmond sport. After the selection procedure, I was invited to join the youth academy in August 2007. By constantly developing myself, I was able to go through the ranks of the youth academy, before being promoted to the first team in 2016. Following two years of hard work to further develop myself as a football player, the investment resulted in the two-year contract, which was signed in August 2018. During all these years, I combined playing football with my studies, from the primary school until my Bachelor’s degree.
