I’ve been in the Content Marketing business since Bob The Builder had a number one hit with Can We Fix It. That was back in December 2000, by the way. The first few years were spent playing videogames and writing articles about them for the Official PlayStation Magazine. Tough gig. I then graduated through the ranks at Future before snagging an editorship of my own mag. With the tide turning ever more towards the digital, I moved onto websites, picking up the requisite skills in Content Management Systems, SEO, Social Media, paid search, email marketing, YouTube and all the other good stuff. From 2012 I moved away from print and digital media and into the realm of B2C ecommerce (with a splash of B2B on the side), first heading up the content team at an SEO agency, and latterly heading up the Content team at Lovehoney. And what a wild ride it was at Lovehoney. At its peak there were 15 of us in Content, and working to my ever-evolving customer-focused content strategy, we delivered tens of thousands of product descriptions, packaging copy and content for thousands of own-brand products, hundreds of Advice guides and blogs, YouTube videos galore, three seasons of a podcast, one highly-engaged forum, three new websites – and for a period, translations for all of it into French, German and Spanish for our non-English-language websites. We were on the frontline of delivering Lovehoney’s message of Sexual Happiness for all. The rewards were millions of page views across the websites, increased engagement across non-owned channels and boosts to referral traffic, and overall growth of brand awareness that helped lead to sustained year-on-year growth. It wasn’t all about the content, though. As the company continued to grow, its developed-in-house systems started to creak and through 2019 and 2020 I played a key role in a humongous Digitial Transformation project, helping to transition the company and the content to SalesForce Commerce Cloud, Amplience (CMS), Yotpo (reviews provider), Discourse (Forum platform) and Akeneo (PIM). The best bit of the Transformation project? We delivered it during lockdown when we were all working remotely. The Lovehoney days are over for me now, but new and exciting adventures in Content Marketing await.
