Project Overview - System Modification Program (SMP) installationThe Water Corporation’s (the Corporation) strategic planning document: Water Forever – towards climate resilience has recognised groundwater replenishment (GWR) as critical to its Groundwater Security Strategy (GWSS) for Perth. As part of the Corporation’s 10-year plan, secondary treated wastewater flow from the Beenyup Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) was identified as a preferred water source option for maintaining groundwater and achieving long-term water resilience in the city’s northern region.A successful Groundwater Replenishment Trial (GWRT) was undertaken by the Corporation at the Beenyup WWTP site from 2010 through to 2014 confirming the technical and social feasibility of an advanced water recycling process for producing water that is suitable for replenishing groundwater. The ultimate planned Perth GWR Scheme consists of an advanced water recycling plant (AWRP) at the Beenyup site and a combination of six Leederville and four Yarragadee recharge bores on site and in a north south line to the east of Lake Joondalup with the works staggered over four stages. This project is focussed on the delivery of Stage 2of the planned GWR scheme, which encompasses recharging 14 GL/year on site at Beenyup and development of the Master Plan for the AWRP to facilitate integration of all future works. From a process and process control perspective, the GWR scheme will be one of the most complex plants ever constructed by the Corporation.
