Sadly, there is no way to make a living by patronizing local, independent businesses. I figured out pretty early in my career that the best alternative was to dedicate my work life, and a lot of my free time, to helping those businesses thrive. As an expert in both nonprofit management and economic development, I develop and manage programs that provide resources, technical assistance and advocacy for individual businesses and commercial districts across Maryland. In addition, I have extensive and varied project management skills that include city-wide promotional campaigns and complex eminent domain/construction projects. Working in economic development I honed skills necessary to help entrepreneurs select the best approaches for them and navigate the many steps required to effectively open and sustain a thriving business. For example, business planning and operations, evaluation, permitting, cutting through red tape, understanding local zoning and regulations, reviewing construction plans, financing, marketing and bookkeeping. Having experience working in both public and nonprofit sector agencies that support small businesses and other nonprofit organizations, I am skilled in fundraising, grant management, event coordination, volunteer coordination, partnership building, pro-forma analysis and working with media.I’m a true team player who takes ownership of my projects and tasks, and refers to the organization as “we” in interviews. While I’m comfortable working with knowledgeable professionals and overachievers, I especially enjoy working with and for underdogs and folks who are willing to put in the hard work to reach their goals and dreams.I am always looking for opportunities to help local businesses, Main Streets and business districts in new and innovative ways.
