I was recruited as a civil engineer apprentice and during my time, was consistently given more responsibilities while being trained by my line manager, a qualified engineer. John Reddington Ltd is a subsidiary company of the JRL Group and specialises in reinforced concrete frames and piling foundations. I have had the opportunity to gather a lot of experience with structural, drainage and reinforcement drawings and have become proficient in setting out using the latest Topcom EDM technology. After 2 months, my line manager went on holiday for two weeks and during his absence, I took over all of his responsibilities and was commended on my abilities by senior management and rewarded with a pay increase. The biggest challenge I faced was prioritising tasks within such a tight and ambitious timetable while closely monitoring quality and safety and the adherence to building regulations.

I spent a few months shadowing one of the senior handymen, acting as his apprentice until I was given my own responsibilities. I have carried out a wide range of jobs on site such as waterproofing, dry-lining, carpentry, concrete and latexing, soundproofing, scaffolding and painting. I was also given the opportunity to complete a 2 day SSSTS training course which I passed with a score of 96%. Subsequently, I was often given the responsibilities of a supervisor
