As a Lead Lab Demonstrator, my role is to run an entire session of hands-on Medical Research learning experience. Whether it be a ‘Dry Lab’ session, which is run as a classroom, explaining techniques such as PCR, or a ‘Wet Lab’ session, an actual PC2 Laboratory, where it’s my role to ensure all students are strictly abiding by PC2 rules, to teach them proper use of micropipettes and guide them through PCR protocol, for example.

It was through recommendation from volunteering in the Bond Lab for Structural Biology and 4 years experience teaching children as a sailing instructor which meant I was accepted straight into a casual position. As a sailing instructor I have responsibility over a class of children aged 10-17 in a potentially dangerous environment (the ocean). I instruct the students alone on how to rig the sailing boats, how to steer them, how to trim the sails etc while I am on a RIB providing support and towing them in when necessary. This high stress job prepared me well for my job as a Lab Demonstrator Assistant.
