Apr 2012 - Apr 2016LondonHaving been engaged to provide a Business Plan and Strategic Vision for this start-up company by the founder I then joined the business to deliver that plan, initially as COO (see below) and then CEO.Following the design and successful product launch for "xxpress", the world's fastest real-time PCR Thermal Cycler, I identified and recruited a team of talented and experienced individuals to enable us to take the product to market. Transitioning from a virtual to a very real company we created our own distributor network, supply chain, and assembly facilities including in-house calibration and test platforms to provide accelerated ageing . We began shipping xxpress to customers in 2014. The pioneering nature and potential of xxpress was recognised as it was chosen as an "Innovation Icon" for the "Britain is GREAT" campaign led from the Prime Minister's Office. As typical of most start-ups we were constantly balancing the need to develop the technology’s capability with limited resources, and the need to generate income. This required clear communication and the ability to be highly responsive to events, delivering more with less in every situation.Externally I developed productive business relationships with key industry players in the Applied and Molecular Diagnostic fields who were interested in M&A and technology licencing; selling the vision and capability of both the system and the team. The product, a real-time PCR thermal cycler, is the world’s fastest; delivering a 40 cycle PCR in less than 10 minutes, less than a quarter of the previous best. Very hands-on I covered everything from the user interface and web-site creation to the plastic moulding and high-force clamping design.The product was highly innovative bringing the human interface and product design standards of high value consumer goods to laboratory instrumentation. I built on the initial patents providing further world-wide protection for the technology, the product and its consumables.The product was presented at a number of leading industry trade shows where it stole the show and enabled us to rapidly build a worldwide network of distributors.
