Out of Band Solutions develop and produce advanced network power control solutionsMentored the owner on critical business areas, recruited and trained a Sales Manager, created processes and trained staff to release owner’s time. Developed and delivered a strategy to enable the selling of a new product line “SureOne” into the network providers.Technology Transfer Gurit plc.Designed an internal Technology Transfer protocol for a composite production processes to enable Worldwide replication. Demystified and captured the existing production processes as well as managed the staff concern created by taking production off-shore. I proved the transfer protocol using it to successfully replicate production in North America and China.

Having been engaged to provide a Business Plan and Strategic Vision for this start-up company by the founder I then joined the business to deliver that plan, initially as COO (see below) and then CEO.Following the design and successful product launch for "xxpress", the world's fastest real-time PCR Thermal Cycler, I identified and recruited a team of talented and experienced individuals to enable us to take the product to market. Transitioning from a virtual to a very real company we created our own distributor network, supply chain, and assembly facilities including in-house calibration and test platforms to provide accelerated ageing . We began shipping xxpress to customers in 2014. The pioneering nature and potential of xxpress was recognised as it was chosen as an "Innovation Icon" for the "Britain is GREAT" campaign led from the Prime Minister's Office. As typical of most start-ups we were constantly balancing the need to develop the technology’s capability with limited resources, and the need to generate income. This required clear communication and the ability to be highly responsive to events, delivering more with less in every situation.Externally I developed productive business relationships with key industry players in the Applied and Molecular Diagnostic fields who were interested in M&A and technology licencing; selling the vision and capability of both the system and the team. This included successful fund raising work with Venture Capital and Private Equity groups as well as private investors.I have also built a wide network of collaborators within the London Universities and Golden Triangle Biotech Hubs, forming consortia to address issues of national and international health such as growing antibiotic resistance and Sepsis.

Having been engaged to provide a Business Plan and Strategic Vision for this start-up company by the founder I then joined the business to deliver that plan.Presented with a patented heating technology I assembled and managed a team of external design houses, contractors and suppliers to create a product from this idea. The product, a real-time PCR thermal cycler, is the world’s fastest; delivering a 40 cycle PCR in less than 10 minutes, less than a quarter of the previous best. Very hands-on I covered everything from the user interface and web-site creation to the plastic moulding and high-force clamping design.The product was highly innovative bringing the human interface and product design standards of high value consumer goods to laboratory instrumentation. I built on the initial patents providing further world-wide protection for the technology, the product and its consumables.The product was presented at a number of leading industry trade shows where it stole the show and enabled us to rapidly build a worldwide network of distributors.

SRT sold wireless technology in the form of a reference designs to international OEM customers to enable them to create their own products.I joined to set-up their Customer Relationship and Technology Transfer teams from scratch. We had to project manage the customer's developments whilst at the same time extracting the information required from our own development team. All the companies were in the Far East and so we had to build the rapport across political and cultural boundaries, particularly critical in a region where personal relationships are so very important.Achievements:• Created the conditions that allowed a successful flotation on the AIM market, twice raising funds. The company achieved a market capitalisation of over $80M.• Increased revenue from $1.8M to $6M in two years through strong customer management and hitting project deadlines, internally and externally. Creating a $3M profit from a $1M loss.• Delivered design integration and manufacturing processes for 5 international corporate Asian customers within an 18 month period.• Set-up the Customer Relationship and Technology Transfer Teams from scratch.• Honed my customer management and sales skills externally whilst driving new processes within our company

With a turnover of $35M and 150 staff worldwide, Tellermate provides cash management solutions to the retail, hospitality and banking sectors across 5 continents with major US and European subsidiaries.Reporting to the Group Managing Director, I was responsible for Tellermate’s technical direction, the exploitation of its technology, and managing a global team of 30 engineers with a budget of $3M.Achievements:• Reduced product costs by 28% in two years, increasing gross profit by $2.5M.• Enabled initial sales ($800K) of a new intelligent cash drawer product by increasing reliability from 3K to 250K cycles per failure in less than a year through design and manufacturing enhancements.• Increased distribution sales from 3% to 25% (>$9M) through developing new software tools.• Running an international team with differing cultures provided a challenge that I enjoyed and rose to.

With a turnover of £2M and 10 staff, Quail produces radio communication products used in the retail, security and service sectors.Reporting to the CEO of Quail’s holding company, I was responsible for Quail’s technical direction, product design, and project management, as well as all aspects of the company’s manufacturing, supply chain management and quality systems.Achievements:• Conceived and created a new Digital (DECT) product that increased sales by £500K (25%) in 6 months.• Rationalised a multi-site operation on two continents to a single site business, increasing margins by 20% and reducing WIP stock value to zero.• Instrumental in the successful move into large format retail stores developing relationships with Asda/Wal-Mart, Tesco, and Sainsbury’s which increased gross profits by £700K in 12 months.

With a turnover of £10M and 25 staff, European Data Systems conceived and marketed rugged PC’s for industrial and military markets.Reporting to the Managing Director, I was responsible for all aspects of the company’s production engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain management. Also Project Manager of the new handheld computer.Achievements:• Personally won a £2.5M design contract for a handheld military PC for the Special Forces.• Eliminated a £4M order backlog in five months increasing profits by £800K for the year.

Direct management through 5 line managers of 10 indirect, over a 120 direct staff, and expenditure of >£10M.Achievements:• Grew Airtech’s in-house production from £2M turnover to £25M in 18 months.• Successfully floated Airtech on the AIM market raising £12M and valuing the business at £25M.• My first Board position; energised by the additional responsibility and the publically quoted deadlines.

Later set-up Psion’s in-house SMA manufacturing running a 24hours/7day operations leading a team of 15 engineers and 50 direct staff. Achievements:• Led the team that design Series3/3a/3c PDA increasing sales from £20M to £60M in 3 years, and turning a £2M loss to a £6.5M profit. Played my part in creating the concept of the first PDA.• Moved production in-house designing, implementing and running the process; reduced costs by 30% and scrap by 70% whilst production trebled. Built a world class SMA facility from scratch.
