About Nick Ditmore

I’m a design manager passionate about making people’s lives better by doing what is right by the products they make and use. I advocate fiercely for collaboration and openness, because design doesn’t begin or end with a design team. Once worked to replace ads in Times Square with art, among other odd past lives.

May 2006 - Jun 2008

Campaign Art Director & Web Graphic Designer

Us

Brooklyn Industries is a brand normally associated with images of Brooklynites around Brooklyn. But in 2007 and 2008, we explored their brand and marketing as a vehicle for meaningful cultural dialogue. They hired me with the intention of running campaigns that spoke to political issues they and their customers cared about. Whether exploring the idea of weaponizing our purchasing decisions, or celebrating everyone finding their little piece of nature in the city, we explored three strong seasons together and the idea that a brand can be more than a product or a service — it can be a bold and participatory voice in important societal discourse. It remains some of my favorite work. From testing and pitching campaign concepts, to hiring and directing photographers, models, stylists, hair stylists, to retouching and designing the final campaign art, writing campaign copy, working with window designers for the in-store displays, merchandizers on in-store signage, and the web team on web marketing and the site itself, I worked on every aspect of campaign creative.

I designed and directed the brand's marketing and creative, handling everything from promotional marketing and event signage to microsites and car wraps.

Endlessroom.Com

Rebranded, redesigned, and pivoted StudentArtStore.com (originally described as "eBay for Art") into Endless Room: a gallery, marketplace, and social network for the art world. We envisioned an "endless room" for every artist, gallery, collector, and art lover on earth, in which they could buy, sell, share, and experience art. After brokering initial angel investments and designing and building a working beta, I resigned from my position due to creative differences regarding brand and strategic direction.

2005 - 2007 ~2 yrs

Founder & Curator

Culture Drone Foundation

While living in Tokyo I founded a not-for-profit organization dedicated to bringing artists together to creating international group exhibitions in major cities. Our mission was to use the power of art and human experience to engage people in a conversation about important but neglected issues in our increasingly global society.

2004 - 2007 ~3 yrs

Specialist

Cupertino, California, Us

Working for Apple has been a dream of mine since the first computer I ever used was a Macintosh SE/30 in 1989. After becoming an expectant father-to-be, and before moving to NYC, I worked for six months in the Chestnut Hill Apple Store to supplement my income from clients. I turned down the position of Genius because I enjoyed the sales floor and the higher level of personal interaction with customers.Personal highlight: I once helped a group of missionary nuns purchase an iPod Shuffle as a birthday present for one of the more elderly sisters; they had not factored in the tax, and they were $10 short. Their monastery was a full day's drive away, and nuns do not have credit cards, so I paid for the difference. A week later they came back to express their gratitude with a thank you card signed by all the sisters and a blessed vial of holy water from the Dead Sea.
