I'm Director of Thought Leadership for Cambridge University Press & Assessment English.I graduated in Linguistics in 1980 and hold an MA TEFL (1990) from the University of Reading and MA Cantab. I have a PhD in the impact of language assessment in educational contexts supervised by Prof. Cyril Weir at the University of Bedfordshire (2009). In 2023, I became a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (FAcSS).As Thought Leader, I represent Cambridge at international conferences and policy forums and present on a wide range of topics. My current interest is in Learning Oriented Assessment (LOA) and the integration of language learning with assessment using EdTech plus EdAI. Other areas of expertise include: Codes of Practice & ethical frameworks for language assessment, plurilingualism, test impact, QMS in test development & validation, language assessment in the context of migration, and assessment literacy.After studying linguistics, I started my career as a language teacher and taught English in Italy for 6 years at the University of Cagliari. I began working in assessment in 1987 when I managed test development projects in Japan for the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES).In 1989, I moved to Cambridge and joined the first EFL Evaluation Unit with Michael Milanovic. I held several roles related to test development & validation and in 2001 became Director of Research & Validation. I have worked on IELTS since 1989 and have chaired the Joint-Research Committee since 2001. From 2015 until the merger between CUP & Cambridge Assessment (now CUP&A) in 2021, I was Director, Research & Thought Leadership.Within the wider University, I co-founded the Cambridge Learner Corpus and English Profile Programme – Reference Level Descriptions for English to accompany the CEFR, including the English Profile Studies series. I'm on the Management Committee for the Institute for Automated Language Teaching and Assessment (ALTA) and for the Interdisciplinary Research Centre (IRC) for the Language Sciences. I'm joint-series Editor of the Studies in Language Testing series and I co-direct the university's MSt in English Language Assessment.I'm the elected Secretary-General of ALTE - Association of Language Testers in Europe - and an expert for the Council of Europe, European Parliament & EU Commission. I've attended LTRC since 1991 and was a founder member of ILTA. I'm a Board member of TIRF and was Visiting Professor at the University of Xiamen - 2018-2021. Currently I jointly chair the Cambridge/NEEA Innovation Centre in China.
