Photographic Technician
CurrentIn this new role, I have the responsibility of managing and co-ordinating all the photographic equipment and facilities for this new degree course in photography. The photographic facilities at Bucks New University are complete and varied, offering 2 studios, a darkroom, large format digital printing and a wide range of digital and analogue equipment.
Photographic Artist
CurrentMy art practice revolves around creating expressive abstract images which are made from photographs of the outside world. The work attempts to reframe the symbolic link between photographs of place to personal experience and past trauma. Please see my website for further images.
Account Manager
At Siso I acted as front-line support of Siso's Smarthub inventory management software. I worked with over 100 FE/HE technical departments on implementing and improving their resource management through the software. Working face to face as well as online, I implemented comprehensive software training to small and large teams. I project managed and coordinated the online knowledge base for the software giving clients an on-line resource. As part of the software development team, I helped push forward many improvements, including designing an online CoSHH tool. During the Covid pandemic, I worked with technical teams within the FE/HE sector on using the system to provide quarantining control and monitoring of resources as well as writing a guide on ways to achieve this.
Photography Technician Demonstrator
As a photographic technician demonstrator, I worked in preparation, maintenance and health & safety, monitoring for the darkroom, studio, digital print and photographic equipment. I coordinated and implemented induction paperwork and workshops. I was responsible for risk assessments and CoSHH for photographic facilities in digital print and darkroom. I also implemented and monitored student activity-based risk assessments, using the Siso Smarthub system. I coordinated, prepared and maintained resources for use by students and staff, including digital calibration, printing, mounting, exhibition preparation and hanging. I acted as technical demonstrator in groups and on a one-to-one basis in the studio, darkroom, with photographic equipment and with digital software and printing. As a full time technician, I was often first point of call for student pastoral support and acted as School technical disability coordinator.
Photographer
I ran my own photographic business working on events, weddings, portraiture and estate agency photography. I successfully designed and implemented my own business development and marketing plan. I developed my own digital workflow, printing and dispatching in-house, employing assistants for busy periods. I became a Licentiate of the British Institute of Professional Photography, becoming the chair of the South Eastern region.
Administrator
I joined LCACE (later TCCE) at the start-up phase of the centre. I had the task to organize the centre’s office systems and financial arrangements. I worked with the core team to develop the centre’s website and initial promotional material. I was tasked with setting up a number of key events including the Centre’s launch event at the Courtauld Gallery. I have subsequently worked closely with TCCE, photographing events and becoming involved in projects and their yearly festival.
Postgraduate Secretary
I was the first point of call for all academic and pastoral support for postgraduate students in the college’s large Computer Science department. I had the task of handling all prospective postgraduate enquiries, offering guidance and passing on the query where necessary. As part of a team of administrators, I coordinated the new postgraduate student induction. I also had responsibility over research student’s records.
Designer/Photographer
I worked in partnership with my father on transport planning projects as a photographer and graphic designer. My father’s vision was to bring better visual communication to the public transport industry and so our main commission base surrounded national public transport promotion campaigns. The role included visualisation work through photography (still analogue at the time, using Nikon FM3a and Mamiya 645 Pro TL) and graphic design using Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. After finishing working full time, I continued to work with my father until he retired in 2009.
Digital Technician/Printer
My responsibilities as a digital artworker were to scan, clean and balance client’s film. I also operated the Kodak LED printer, HP large format printer and created fine art prints on the IRIS printer. Before starting at Flash, I travelled for a while around the US and then started a voluntary role at the Camden Centre for People with Learning Difficulties, helping some of the centre’s members to take and display photography.
Assistant Photographer
During this time I worked as a freelance assistant photographer and also on a voluntary basis for the Scientific Exploration Society, traveling with them to the Caribbean on an ornithological expedition and raising money for the protection of Siberian Tigers. I also travelled throughout Europe.
Photographic Assistant
As an assistant photographer in a busy, in-house photographic department I supported the photographers on all the promotional photography for the book club, as well as advertising of books that were on offer. This involved complex room setup shots, still life and working with models. All images were taken on large format, Sinar P film cameras at 5x4 and 10x8. Towards the end of my time at BCA, the department invested in digital technology. This was my first look at Photoshop.
