Nico has more than ten years of experience in designing, managing and conducting research and evaluations in international development. His thematic expertise and professional interest include value chain analysis, agricultural innovation adoption, food security/nutrition and agricultural development more broadly. The RTG comprised comprehensive training in areas of agriculture, nutrition and impact evaluation. In his PhD research, Nico studied the determinants and impacts of farmers’ participation in agricultural value chains in Ecuador combining qualitative data collection (e.g., key-informant interviews, focus groups) with a quasi-experimental design, including the implementation of an agricultural household survey. Nico has experience working with diverse stakeholders such as policymakers, ministries, implementation organizsations, NGO(s) or agricultural research institutes. His country experience includes Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Jordan, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam.

I assume technical responsibility for the quantitative component of this design, such as questionnaire development, collection, cleaning and analysis of data from 600+ livestock keeping households. Analysis will be conducted using difference-in-difference (DiD) combined with coarsened exact matching in STATA. I am closely working together with a key expert responsible for collection and analysis of qualitative data (e.g., most significant change technique). Evaluation Consultant
I worked as evaluation consultant with the International Potato Centre (CIP) in Tamale (Ghana) in the course of the Generating Revenues and Opportunities for Women to Improve Nutrition in Ghana (GROWING). The final deliverable of the consultancy was a completed baseline report for the GROWING project. This included tasks such as cleaning, processing and analyzing of baseline data in STATA, collected from 1,800 rural households in Northern Ghana, and writing of the baseline report. Data analysis was performed for the project-level women’s empowerment in agriculture index (Pro-WEAI), food security, nutrition, anthropometric measurements, access to agricultural services and household assets/wealth.I closely collaborated with the M&E officer of CIP-Ghana in all technical steps of this assignment. My responsibilities also included regular reporting to project leadership on progress made and challenges encountered in accordance with agreed deadlines.
Research Consultant - Agricultural Economics
I worked as a research consultant with CIMMYT India in the course of the Accelerating Genetic Gains in Maize and Wheat (AGG) project. The tasks included writing concept notes and developing methodological approaches for three manuscripts. I was further responsible for cleaning, processing and analyzing household survey data collected from more than 1,000 wheat farmers in Bihar state (India). I employed statistical and econometric techniques to analyze 1) farmers’ adoption of improved wheat varieties from a social inclusion and gender perspective using gender-disaggregated data and 2) the impacts of cultivating public or private sector wheat varieties on yields among wheat farmers. Findings and implications were shared with CIMMYT colleagues during an AGG workshop held in Hyderabad.
