About Nico Herforth

Nico has more than ten years of experience in designing, managing and conducting research and evaluations in international development. His thematic expertise and professional interest include value chain analysis, agricultural innovation adoption, food security/nutrition and agricultural development more broadly. Over the last six years, Nico worked at the German Institute for Development Evaluation as team leader or evaluator in different evaluation projects and in diverse teams. His main tasks/ experiences were as follows:- As team leader he provided leadership to the team and external consultants on all aspects of data collection and analysis, e.g. coding and quality assessment of evaluation reports- execution of a quasi-experimental design to evaluate the impact of cash for work (CfW) projects in Turkey and Jordan, including implementation of a household survey with 2.500 participants, sampling, data cleaning and analysis with STATA- collection and analysis of qualitative data (e.g. in-depth interviews, focus groups, project documents, literature) with MaxQDA - synthesized findings from different data sources and jointly derived policy recommendations for ministry or implementation organizations- contributed to various publications and activities to disseminate key evaluation findings (e.g., reports, policy brief, conference presentation)Nico received a PhD in agricultural economics from the University of Goettingen (Germany) as member of the research training group (RTG) ,Global Food’. The RTG comprised comprehensive training in areas of agriculture, nutrition and impact evaluation. In his PhD research, Nico studied the determinants and impacts of farmers’ participation in agricultural value chains in Ecuador combining qualitative data collection (e.g., key-informant interviews, focus groups) with a quasi-experimental design, including the implementation of an agricultural household survey. Nico has experience working with diverse stakeholders such as policymakers, ministries, implementation organizsations, NGO(s) or agricultural research institutes. His country experience includes Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Jordan, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam.
