Nicol Design, v 1 was a design firm which concentrated on the development of sustainable design of housing, furniture and products, based in Calgary, AB. Nicol Design sought designs which aid in the development of the green economy, through:- analysis of materials and waste streams for sustainable raw materials; - integration of local and regional expertise to work on opportunities in sustainable housing, manufacturing and transportation; - and management of collaborative and interdisciplinary design teams to develop sustainable products and technologies.

With the idea of building capacity for green building in the East Kootenays, Kevin approached Wildsight and the City of Kimberley with the idea of organizing a green building conference in August of 2009. After securing funding, with partners Wildsight, the City, the Columbia Basin Trust, the Kootenay Rockies Innovation Council, BC Heritage Branch, CityGreen Solutions, and College of the Rockies, Kevin worked under contract to Wildsight to organize the conference, with the assistance of staff from Wildsight, the City and the College.Kevin handled the curriculum and program development, course development and art direction. The conference included an opening gala, with presentations in person and via remote video feed (early days), a full slate of courses with experts from the local area as well as the region, a Green and Affordable Housing Design Competition, a trade Showcase, and a Saturday Evening Social. Keynote speakers included Sarah Susanka, Stuart Cowan, Tang Lee and David Eisenberg. A raft of local experts were course instructors.This became one of the premier green building conferences of its time in the West, running for 4 years. Small, yet mighty.
