Develops and advances policy advocacy campaigns to create safety in the communities most impacted by violence and incarceration, including building non-punitive systems of community-based safety, and advocating to end harmful practices in the criminal legal system that further marginalize communities.• Leads the development and implementation of Urban Peace Institute’s policy platform to advance the mission through research, advocacy, and organizing. • Supports the work of the Los Angeles Violence Intervention Coalition and the Los Angeles Youth Uprising Coalition through policy analysis and advocacy.• Provides organizational support to key initiatives including communications strategy and assisting with strategic plan implementation.

Supports advocacy and technical assistance strategies to end the incarceration of girls and gender-expansive youth, with a focus on the state of California.• Manage site-based technical assistance work through the Ending Girls’ Incarceration in California Action Network, a partnership between Vera and the California Office of Youth and Community Restoration. Assist county leaders in Los Angeles and Imperial counties to enact equitable policies and gender-responsive programming to immediately reduce girls’ incarceration and set in motion multi-year plans to get to zero.• Support local Los Angeles initiatives, including work with the county Department of Youth Development, the gender-responsive Youth Justice Advisory Group, and various community-based organizations and coalitions.• Develop and implement a statewide strategy for policy and legislative change.

Member of the inaugural cohort of the Eisenhower Fellowships USA Justice Program. Traveled to Ireland, Northern Ireland, and New Zealand to learn about their systems of youth justice, police diversion, oversight, and restorative justice. Upon returning from the fellowship, I work to share new approaches, legislation, and innovative programs that can be applied to advance Youth Justice Reimagined with fellow advocates and policymakers in LA County. I continue to welcome Eisenhower Fellows from around the world to learn from them and share about our work in Los Angeles.

Develop and execute a broad policy agenda at a national organization dedicated to health-focused approaches to public safety and ending mass incarceration, with a focus on LA County. Collaborate with public and community-based partners for large-scale systems solutions in the areas of youth justice transformation and community-led safety. Promoted to Policy Coordinator in December 2020 and to Policy Manager in December 2021. • Create connections across UPI policy agenda and coalition efforts, including LA Youth Uprising, LA Violence Intervention Coalition and Reimagine LA coalitions, to maximize impact and ensure practitioners and stakeholders can inform policy solutions • Track and lead advocacy around justice-related funding streams totaling over $1 billion, and successfully advocated for investments into community health and youth development infrastructure totaling over $60 million in FY 2021-22 • Provide technical assistance in training and protocols for LA County office of Youth Diversion and Development to support successful scaling-up of county-wide youth pre-arrest diversion

Advance policy agenda to transform juvenile and criminal justice systems in Los Angeles through advocacy, research, and coalition partnerships. Particular focus on advocating for Youth Justice Reimagined, a large-scale transformation of LA County’s juvenile justice system.• Coordinating member of Los Angeles Youth Uprising coalition, supporting all levels of coalition management, strategic advocacy, development, research and policy recommendations• Active participant in developing policy recommendation through county-wide task forces such as the Alternatives to Incarceration Work Group, Youth Justice Work Group, and Measure J Advisory Committee• Coordinate coalition-wide communications efforts, including messaging, talking points, branding and media strategy

Research, write and project manage in a 25-year-old, multi-disciplinary policy institute with a focus on Latino and immigrant communities based at the University of Southern California. Partner with organizations such as the MacArthur Foundation’s Safety and Justice Challenge, National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) and the California Community Foundation.• Promulgate broad array of criminal justice policies which reduce racial disparities in jails and shield non-citizens from immigration consequences. Acted as a support and thought partner in a private family foundation focused on social innovation and civic activation in Los Angeles. Assisted in daily operations, research, grant management, and scheduling in a tight-knit, team environment.• Proactively managed president’s schedule and relevant email correspondence with grantees, partner foundations, investment committee and other partners. • Updated 60+ key metrics for foundation’s LA2050 initiative and provide research on organizations, entrepreneurs, and prospective grantees for meetings and speaking engagements.

Directed programming in grassroots advocacy organization working with immigrant and refugee communities. Supervised up to 6 staff and 4 leadership programs to cultivate civic engagement, with budgets totaling over $450,000. Oversaw and executed legislative and electoral campaigns and participated in strategic planning.• Managed canvassing and phone-banking operations using Voter Activation Network - My Campaign database in Oregon’s tri-county urban area for Measure 88 – the state’s first bilingual electoral campaign.• Played leadership role in multi-year campaign to end collaboration between Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and sheriff’s office resulting in the cessation of all ICE detainers in Oregon jails. • Helped to maintain organizational database to track engagement, contacts, and donations for over 5,000 members.

Spearheaded civic engagement programs, such as voter registration drives and Get-Out-The-Vote efforts to build electoral power in immigrant and refugee communities, and empower them to challenge structural barriers that impact their lives.• Helped to start and implement the New American Voters Project with non-profit partners and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), a program that has registered over 15,000 new citizen voters as of May 2016.• Organized refugee tenants speaking 5 different languages to gain repairs for their substandard living conditions and advocate at the city and state level for policies that support safe and affordable housing.

Provided secondary research for a firm in Corporate Social Responsibility that consults with mining, dams, and other major industries in Chile. • Created an online library of 200+ articles in the field, Spanish and English. • Maintained and updated Visiona website with current news, videos, and events.
