Research assistant in the Analytical Chemistry Department at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill in the lab of Dr. Jeffrey E. Dick. My research has focused on the electrosynthesis and analysis of nanoparticles using a method developed by our group, nanodroplet mediated electrodeposition from an inverse emulsion. For this research, I have characterized nanoparticle and ultramicroelectrode morphology using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy paired with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. To gain a better fundamental understanding of nanoparticles and better guide their synthesis for applications-based research, I acquired and analyzed data to characterize the growth of single copper nanoparticles via amperometry, their reversible voltammetric behavior, and the effects of surfactants on the growth kinetics and morphology of copper nanoparticles. In order to study applications of nanoparticles in electrocatalysis, I have created COMSOL simulations to model electrocatalytic reactions using different electrode and catalyst geometries. Devoting time to the understanding of fundamental properties allows us to more efficiently and productively direct synthesis for a variety of applications.

The focus of this internship was to ensure that all collections in the Rollins Archaeology Department were NAGPRA compliant. This included taking inventory of any and all human remains as well as cultural items so that they may be repatriated to the appropriate tribe.

The focus of this research has been on using iron based catalysts to perform organic reactions such as Grignard reactions. These simple iron complexes have been synthesized in an air free environment and characterized using IR spectroscopy, H NMR spectroscopy, and GC-MS spectrometry.

The primary work of this internship has been centered on doing a rehabilitation ofthe numerous collections in the Rollins Archaeology Lab, which have been long forgotten. The different Florida collections have also been catalogued using the standard archaeological techniques with an online database being used to further archive these records.
