Project: FINER SCALE FORAGING BEHAVIORS OF DOMESTIC CATS (Felis Catus)Understanding how animals exploit their habitats, is important for identifying the connectivity between the ecological niche of a species in its natural environment, which involves gathering information on free-roaming behaviours. The collection of these data can often prove difficult, especially for obscure species or species that modify behaviours when interacting with humans. Accelerometery methods used in movement ecology allow remote collection of valuable data, representing quantitative information on species’ behaviours. Currently, information derived from accelerometers identifies coarser scale energy expenditure levels and is limited in detecting multiple finer-scale behaviours with consistent accuracy. Here we address these shortcomings, by combining synchronised accelerometer trace signatures and video footage to investigate the finer-scale activities (thereby identifying biomechanical movement patterns) of free-roaming domestic cats (Felis catus), whilst wearing a prey-protector bib. To achieve this goal, we developed an interactive MATLAB tool, which enabled annotating 12 behaviours, typical of wild-roaming domestic cats, including hunting behaviours. From the labelled data, we used a supervised machine learning algorithm in the form of a Self-Organising Map (SOM) algorithm in R, to model identified individual behaviours, relative to summaries of accelerometer data (model accuracy >94%). In this way, we were able not only to identify individual behaviours on the basis of accelerometer data alone, and distinguish which activities were modified by the presence of the bib. This methodology has a broader application, that can be applied to accelerometery and movement ecology research, to gauge finer-scale behavioural classification information, so as to better understand species movements.
