A few weeks ago, I made a hard decision to leave a beloved brand, job, company, team and friends – whom I love dearly. At a going away party, I was given a book, titled “Nicoleisms”. People I’ve worked with over the years were asked to submit their favorite quotes. In truth, many I don’t recall saying. But to someone, they ‘stuck’. A few of my favorites:• Listen more. Talk less.• EQ over IQ. Always.• It’s more important to be effective than it is to be right. (This one – I remember. I have a hand lettered illustration that was gifted to me and has been my screensaver for years).• Be the person you want to work with. And for.• When negotiating, it’s "YES, and…"• Your job as a manager is to find every employee’s superpower.• Let it play out, before you freak out.• Feedback is a gift.• Think yes, and maybe…before saying no.• Your how is as important as your what.• Strive for partnership, not competitiveness.It’s interesting when you leave a company after 20+ years. There were no mentions of brands launched, customers & contracts landed, organizations and capabilities built, innovative products commercialized or revenue goals and cost savings targets that were hit. None of these ‘made the book’. I'm good with that. I would rather be remembered as being an advocate, loyalist, cheerleader, underdog champion and collaborative partner to my peers, partners, team…and friends. Your 'how', matters.As I think about the next chapter – I’m open to the possibilities that exist. Whether that is starting my own business, working for another brand/company - or a combination of the two. There is excitement in not knowing what the future holds – and trusting that anything is possible.
