Goolarri, the Indigenous-owned production house and broadcaster for Broome and the wider Kimberley in remote north-west Australia, is the go-to place for any moving-image proponent (artist or client) wanting to explore or reach the strongest remaining sector of first culture in the country. Making long- and shortform documentaries, dramas, PSAs and music videos, at Goolarri you do everything: you produce, write, cast, shoot, edit, finish, even put on air. Having been at my so-called peak a TV-commercial A-list director in Sydney, I faced the no-budget/low-salary comedown exuberantly, because I was well and truly over devoting my soul to selling soapsuds.Most enrichingly, my position gave me an entree, rare for a Euro-Australian, into Kimberley Indigenous culture, both traditional and contemporary, and the opportunity to earn the trust required to articulate it with film. Now, after seven years as a hungrily-learning practitioner in this field I've resigned in order to devote myself finally to writing an ambitious work of my own, drawn from my collected knowledge, conceived as a double-series television epic, and being prewritten as a novel (I just hit page 600: see you on the other side if it works!).Follow the links above to view some of my old and recent stuff.
