Paraplanner
English Teacher
English Language Teacher
I spent the whole of 2015 working for Shane English School in Japan. I taught learners of all ages (2 to 75) in private and group classes. I also occasionally took classes of as many as 30 at a kindergarten. Some of my private lessons included instruction towards the IELTS and TOEIC exams.
Servicedesk & Outsource Engineer
The first three and a half months of 2014 was spent on site at a Southampton-based firm of solicitors. I was part of a team of two covering all areas of IT Support– iPhone, iPad, Dell laptops and desktops, MS Office 2010, MS Windows 7 & XP, Windows server 2003 and 2008, MS Exchange 2010, VMWare VSphere 5.1, Citrix XenApp 5.5, Cisco switches and routers, Wireless networking, first line telephone support and the Winscribe dictation product (using Phillips speechmikes).
It Specialist
2.8 years at IBM, supporting the L&G account as a project technician and as a 3rd line technical support specialist (Wintel) in a tightly managed ITIL environmentSupported multiple Microsoft Active Directory 2003 domains; comprising c1000 servers (Windows 2003 & 2008). IBM Bladecenter & VMWare VSphere 4.1. Supported all systems in the “Wintel” environment, including the Equitrac print solution & Microsoft Windows clustering. Set up and used both the Wireshark & Microsoft Network Monitor products. Also supported Microsoft's Sharepoint & IIS (Internet Information Services) products.Scripting experience: Visual basic 2008, HTML, Javascript, Java, C#, C++, and VBScript. Currently writing my own application in C#.By the end of my time with IBM I was accounting for around 70% of the client’s Wintel BAU (Business As Usual i.e. technical fault fixing) that had yet to be taken on by the off shore team. During 2013 I became exclusively responsible for a number of products including Novell NetWare, the Equitrac print solution, Microsoft Identity Lifecycle Manager, OnTap MPIO DSM upgrades, & Intercope MessagePlus/Open. I wrote documentation for each product and was providing knowledge transfer to the off shore team right up to the point of my departure. My manager’s overall assessment from my most recent appraisal:“…Without Nigel's contribution we would be in a significantly worse situation. He appears to be able to turn his hand to anything. His On-Tap upgrade drew warm feedback while his general support work, often late at night, for long hours has been faultless.“His can-do approach is brought up right through his feedback, not only for the assessment but previously and regularly throughout the year. Furthermore his flexibility in scheduling in work on an account where actually finding and agreeing a testing slot can be difficult, is to be admired. “Overall, Nigel is professional, courteous and keen to assist. In the coming year he will be a key member of the team.”
Technical Specialist
I joined L&G as a specialist in Novell NetWare, qualifying as a Certified Novell Engineer for IntraNetware in 2001.I subsequently played a major role in the migration of over 50 storage and application servers running Novell NetWare 5.1 to Windows 2008 and Active Directory 2003. These server migrations were performed outside of business hours, overnight or during the weekend. Although some of the storage servers had up to 2TB of data these migrations were without exception performed to schedule and with minimal impact to the business.I was involved in numerous Disaster Recovery exercises over the years (all successful), from the days when I would build and restore the entire Novell NetWare environment from scratch to the current process whereby server images are recovered using SAN snap technology. From 2000 I was the main contact at Legal & General for the Intercope MessagePlus/Open product. This is used mainly by the Quotations team as a means for automating the delivery of faxes to IFAs. Through support of this product I have also used VPS to manage Mainframe based printing.Whilst working for Legal & General I was a content editor for the Intranet. I managed a cross country running competition for L&G staff for 6 years, publishing the race details and results on the Intranet. I also set up an external web site for the benefit of the non and ex L&G staff who took part (http://xword.webs.com/other.html).
Systems Engineer
From 1990 to 1998 I was employed by a Chelmsford-based computer dealership, Corporate Computers (later Info'Products UK). All bar 3 months of the period from 1994 to 1998 was spent working at Legal & General, initially in a desktop support role and from 1995 in a role that was developed to include Access Management and support for a Novell 3.1 network that was transitioning to IntraNetware 4.11. At that time the desktop operating systems were Windows 3.1 and IBM OS/2 v2.0. Legal & General employed me in 1998 as they were impressed with the service that I had provided over that period. From 1990 to 1994 I was employed at first as a helpdesk technician, progressed to a role as an evaluator of products and provider of pre-sales support, and then became a field technician (installing and supporting specialised systems and Novell NetWare solutions across the customer base).I joined the IT industry in 1989, working initially as a trainee programmer and then becoming an installation engineer (for companies based in the Southampton area).
